The creativity and originality of the source image is beyond reproach.
I have admired it and it inspires me to do better. I only tried this shot because of that inspiration.

I'm scared of flash also Rod... especially after this attempt as I noted that light can be varied in so many ways. I have a new respect for flash and know that I have to learn it - but also experimenting can be fun. Am I now in the bloke's club? Please let me know :P lol jano

Wow that's excellent using the white board etc, I can barely tame the flash & I'm a bit scared of it but to get light like this from not one but two flashes is superb.................And really manly:-)

Thanks guys for commenting. Always great to have compliments. Rod, I had the 580exii on cam facing up to bounce off the ceiling in my kitchen. The 420 ex was slaved off to the right actually quite close to the bulb towards the lower right of it where i was getting shadow. I finally figured out after continually getting not enough light to my liking that I needed to lower my ceiling!!! I can't lower my ceiling w/o much expense. So I got one of my white coreboards and held it above the shot to allow more bounce coming from above. This allowed more diffused light down on the subject. I probably took 20 some shots before I noted the light I wanted to achieve. You can get those really large white coreboards from some printing shops as they are used for taping on exhibits at trials. I picked up a few from the office when they decide they don't want or need them. You can always buy the smaller versions of course. jano

Two things that really impress me here is, how well you lit this using the flashes & how a girl could hollow out a light bulb:-) I can't see any shadows here Jano, where were the flashes placed?

Sounds like a heck of a lot of work! I probably would have gotten so frustrated I would have just shoved the bug through the glass and asked Janey for advice on how to photoshop out the broken glass. Hehehe

Thanks all for your comnents :) I struggled trying to find how to empty out this damb bulb and anyone seeing me do it would think i'm crazy. But once I figured it out, thanks to Techo, it was pretty easy. So, yes, this is a hallowed out bulb. The plant leaf offered itself up as a sacrifice, but no ladybugs were harmed in the process of shooting this pic. Since we are in the midst of one of our worst winters in years (13 inches of snow in some parts last nite), all ladybugs are cozily resting wherever they rest. This little guy is a craft store purchase. I used the 580exii oncam on the left, with the 420ex on the right as a slave. This was my first time using both together (master and slave) so it took a few shots till I was able to void the shadows. Lime green construction paper as backdrop. Shiny reflective floor tile at the bottom that I supposedly "rented" from Lowes for 5 bucks, which I probably will just keep :) No illusions here. jano

Did you go to all the trouble taken in the original to take the bulb apart etc (most of which I didnt really understand? I love how subtly we see the edge of the bulb almost as if it camouflaged against the green and thats what has confused the ladybird...claire

Well done, Jano. I considered taking this one on, because I really like the original. I ended up declining because I knew there was no way I'd get the lighting perfect as the original. You've done a great job! What? You don't have ladybugs in your refrigerator? *grin* I like it, Jano. ~Lydia
