Christmas Eve Moonset

Back Porch, Allen, Tx

Cropped so that the silhouettes of the Crepe Myrtles and the Tree would be on thirds, the Moon and immediate clouds are centered. While I knew that the brightest part of the image would attract attention I wanted their to be major emphasis on the silhouettes. The real rules broken here are underexposure and over sharpening. Although it is still early morning and quite dark, the sky was bright enough to see into the shadows some. I underexposed both to make sure I captured most of the moon's light and to help blacken the non-essentials. I used the back porch roof to mask off most of the sky. I used over sharpening with a mask to bring out both the Tree and the Crepe Myrtles stark silhouettes.

Qualified. I think what really helps atone for the centering of the moon, is that the cloud follows the angle of the roofline, beautifully. It is dark and empty to the left, and full of color and cloudforms to the right. Much like the roof is featureless, and the clouds featureless on the left side, and the clouds and tree branches strongly detailed with texture on the left. Without that centered moon creating the dividing line between textured and simple, we would not come to such a revelation so easily, possibly missing it altogether. Actually, a much deeper image than it's its simplicity first reveals. Well done. :) ~ Lonnit
