An interesting remark, tv, which I am very grateful for. On one hand, I can clearly see what you mean (and I do partially agree); on the other one, I still think the aircraft--as small as it appears--is *the* subject while the smoke (though relatively big and overall important for the statement the image makes) is just the... well: "leading line". Thank you for a comment that makes me think about how my "subjective" composition is perceived by an "objective" viewer! -- db.

This makes the line into the subject. The plane is almost incidental - little more than a punctiation mark at the end of the line. Nice shot. -tv
