Your welcome, Tom. I find it ironic that I now love using flash in daylight, when I've always hated it before as a main light. Now, who would have guessed that you should only use flash when there's light! LOL! ~ LOnnit

Great composition & color combo! Thanks Lonnit for saying about flash in daylight, I hear it's the most underused technique, myself included.

Yes, that's true, but I really like the expression here - much more interesting than a smile. :) ~ Lonnit

I wish she was smiling, then it would have been a classic "color film advertisement" picture. Great shot, regardless, and absolutely perfect for this challenge.

Yes, the vignetting is a tad more obvious than I usually go, but that face just leaps off the screen like this. One really doesn't spend much time lingering up there though, does one? :) ~ Lonnit

this is by far the best of your three. i like the "breaking-rules" type composition the most. eye-contact is captivating too.
although i did not like the vignetting effect, especially on the top. it helps increase the focus on the face but vignetting on the top looks unnatural/over-processed. if it was a little less intense, it might have passed for polarizing effect though. -Abstract

Lonnit, it looks like you have very nicely held back the saturation in the portrait while upping it in the bg. Or maybe it's just the exposure diff with the flash effect. Nice off-beat framing except for the eye on the center line, which is classic technique. -tv

The image is equally treated for saturation. It's probably just that the tones of the skin, hair, and shirt are all blander tones to begin with. Eye on the center line being classic? Eyes are supposed to be on the upper thirds line. This composition is actually breaking the rule. I NEVER put the eyes at mid-line unless I have excellent reason. This composition would not have been possible if adhering to the rules. I felt the curve of the wheel led back to the face, giving me the permission I needed to break the rule. :) Thanks for all your great comments. :)~ Lonnit

Ahhh, no, no polarizer. You can have catchlights that are natural too, like window light. I feel it gives life to the eyes. ~ Lonnit

CP = Circular Polarizer.

Oh, and I really don't like catch light. It's the one major reason I don't like artificial light. Even for fill.

Technically I'm in Queens now, but lived in Nassau until I got married. I did use flash and now truly appreciate the wonders of fill flash in daylight! The irony is that I've always hated flash. Now I use it in daylight all the time! I still hate it as the main light though, but here it gives a wonderful quality to the face, lessening the drasticity of the shadows, and inserting those lovely catchlights. I just trashed several pix the other day for lack of catchlights, and minor facial darkness. Portraits just look so much better with catchlights.

I am glitching... what's a CP?

Thanks all for your wonderful comments! :) ~ Lonnit

Great composition, lighting and background.
And on another note, see that you're in Nassau County, my Aunt lives in Baldwin :-)

I like the colorful DOF background and pretty portrait.

Did you use a flash there, Lonnit. What about a CP.
Excellent exposure.

Thanks for getting us started, Lonnit. Great photo! I love the rainbow of colors behind her. Beautifully composed.
