I enjoyed this more than the main challenge but I didn't enjoy Mikey posting the winning shot:-)

Weee, this is fun! Thanks CJ, for (accidentally) getting this mini-gallery started. I don't know what your little furry guy is, 'yellow jacket' would be too easy.

Nice bee shots from everyone! Anyone else want to display their bee shots here???? Maybe we should start a bee gallery! ;-) CJ

Rod didn't like my fuzzy entry into the Mini-challenge, so here's a clearer pic of the Real Honey Bees:

This is like a mini challenge for bee shots:-)

Or just stick the lens right up next to the busy bee.

You're probably right about the flash Rod as I've read many people who shot macros use a ring light for those close up shots as the aperture needs to be f/16 or more to get a decent DOF. I'll try the flash...... if I can only find the bees now! ;-) CJ

Maybe try using the flash Carole as it will freeze the action better & in full sun it won't be so obvious it's a flash shot. Here's a couple i took with the slow G2 & on board flash.

Here's to a not so fuzzie future:-)

This is about 75% of the original shot so not that much of a crop. I'm finally trying out the 100mm macro lens but since I'm used to IS lenses, I think I may need to up the ISO to get a faster shutter for these fast moving bees and tiny flowers - it was breezy out that day. The flowers are called Spiria and are very tiny and fuzzy looking. The portion lower right and behind the bee is OOF because of the shallow DOF of this lens. I'll try to get another shot with a high shutter speed and maybe f/16 will get me a bigger DOF too. Warm fuzzies to you Rod! ;-) CJ

I hate to break up this fuzzie fest but soft or out of focus shots can be problematic to me old eyes as I don't know if me eyes are knackered or the shots blurry, or as you say fuzzie:-) I think wiv this type of bright sunlit lighting then a sharp picy is called for, in bright flat lighting the fuzz can be said to give a feel of delicacy. Is this a crop from a larger frame Carole? I must admit that Mikey's blurry shot doesn't help matters here:-)hehe

Oh, I didn't take offence Mikey, I was just commenting on the fuzziness of this kind of bee! Warm fuzzies back at you Mikey! CJ
ctfchallenge28-Jun-2007 06:18
Oh, gosh! I didn't mean to take a thing away from the shot. Her fuzziness is great! ":^) The flower's fuzziness is nice, too. Warm fuzzies, -mikey

Thanks Doug, Tom, Maurice and Mikey! And since I don't know one bee from another, I'll take your word for it Mikey and change the caption. I really like the fuzzy look to this guy compared to the Honeybee though! :-) CJ

Beautiful shot, CJ! Not to rain on your parade, but ... this is kind of up my alley, so, for the record: There are 20,000 varieties of bees and most collect pollen. Honey bees are only one variety, and this isn't one of them ":^) For comparison, here's one:

They kind of look like honey and aren't quite so fuzzy.

Cheers, -mikey

Nice Colours and movement, looks like this bee has been very busy!
ctfchallenge27-Jun-2007 01:59
It reminds me of the time I caught one in my mouth and the stinger in my tongue. Don't like to get too close to bees anymore. -tv

Nice catch. I can even see the stinger. -COAmature
