Thank you Brent - ah I never tell anyone to bugger off. ;)
Thank you Charlie - this is wood taken from a barn door to use for the kids' bus stop. :)

Nice one Sueanne. For some reason that little bit of grass pulls too much of my attention. You may consider cloning it out or just tell me to bugger off as it doesn't seem to bother anyone else :-)

I like the “mostly red & partly non-red” appearance. It makes it look more like a real object, as opposed to one created artificially by PP techniques. I would imagine this as part of the side of a barn.

Well done Sue Anne it works well for me. I would use the burn tool set on shadows to darken all the lines in the wood, you can use a biggish brush. You could also just use the contrast tool but you will lose the pastel look.

By the way, it is nicely photographed and worth saving. I've been playing with it, and one aesthetic problem is to create more of a balance between the strong verticals of the wood grain and the diagonals of the wedge. Then the nature of the wedge can be controlled, say, like an airplane wing, floating or failing according to the forces below or above it based on your crop. OK now I'll shut up. -tv

I think the challange is to transform the image from an obvious picture of "wood" to something else, or better to create an ambiguity about its nature or to imply strongly something "abstract" and beyond "wood". Tight cropping helps to make it virtually unrecognizable or to emphasize some aberration, such as the wedge in this case. Another is to slyly name it something suggesting not "Wood". There's more to this than meets the eye, in other words. Now, if anyone can explain to me what I just said, I would much appreciate it. -tv

Nice subtle colors to your image Sue Anne and I like that big diagonal knothole. I'm not sure cropping or getting closer would make this more abstract unless you really played with hue/saturation, contrast etc. to try to change it's appearance more. It will probably still look like wood, but that's OK! The details look interesting as is. CJ

Nice image, Sueanne. It would be more abstract if you got closer (or cropped), but I like the subdued colors and detail, here. Cheers, -mikey

Thanks Doug and Aam1234

Should I crop or retake?
aam1234 25-May-2007 06:55
I would've gone a little closer personally but this is good as is.
