Maybe Next Year*

Josh sat patiently watching his older brother have all the fun with his classmates during field day.*************NOTE**************I decided to replace the original with one I shot with a larger DOF. To see the original jump over to pending.

I like this version better, COAm. In the original I think the head fills too much of the frame, though I do like the lesser depth of it. It's a great capture nevertheless, the posture, along with the thought behind the title, makes me feel a bit sad for the little guy.... iow it's a well taken shot! :)

I'm in agreement; this version works best for the task at hand Doug. This is very nice touching image. Love that cowlicky thing in little Josh's hair ;-)

I like both, but for this challenge this one tells the story a little better.
Rod 18-May-2007 09:26
For this challenge this is much better Doug but I agree the first one is a better shot of your son. Well done mate.

Great capture of wishful fun.

Thanks to all for the comments/interest. Controlling the DOF was easy with this shot. I actually tried it several ways and just liked the look better with a shallow DOF. Due to popular demand I have replaced my photo with this one. The original is in pending for those interested. -Doug

Given the distance between Doug and his son I'm not sure that even f22 will make the players significantly in focus. I think if Doug can tell us the distances (between him and Josh, and Josh to his brother) it will help us estimate the actual DOF.

Hope I don't sound like I'm arguing, I want to learn. This is a good discussion.

I think this is a great shot, Doug. Super-sharp foreground, good lighting AND its cute. As for how it applies to this Challenge, it probably could have been a bit better with more DOF so you could actually see what was going on in the B/G, but I'm not complaining. Nice! Cheers, -mikey

F/16 would make a significant impact in the distant detail, and still be hand holdable at 1/100 second. When DOF is so important, also consider f/22 and 1/50 sec. if the lens supports it. The DOF benefit overrides possible diffraction effect at this small aperture. -tv

Sure, at f11 or f16 you will get the b/g more in focus, but I will be surprised if it's significantly so. Assuming what we see is how Doug took the picture not a crop of it.

I agree with Rod here. The camera exposure settings leave a lot of room to add DOF. Good idea though, and excellent framing. Eh, Rod? -tv

With these distances (camera to subject & subject to BK) it's almost impossible to get the BG more in focus. That's what I think at least.
Rod 17-May-2007 11:59
Yes very nice Doug but I wish the background had a bit more focus so my eye would travel to what Josh is looking at.

This is nice, I like it.
