May 28, 2006 Mary Anne

Old and New *

Boston, Massachusetts

A view of downtown Boston from the streets of the North End. Now that I'm using a DSLR, I sometimes forget what wonderful DOF my little G3 can provide.

I think the sharpening makes an improvement Mary Anne- looks nice. I'm not sure I would crop out the sky; part of what makes those distant buildings look new is their roofline.

Actually, the more I look at it, the more I think I should crop out the sky completely. I was thinking that it needs to be a vertical shot, but now that boring blue sky seems to be a distraction. What do you think?

I've sharpened it about as much as I can--and probably more than I should have. Hope it looks better.

OK, back I go to sharpen things up a bit. Such taskmasters!! ;-)

Nice job of framing new with old Mary Anne. Great image, but I agree with Daniel that a little sharping could make this even better :-)

I do like this image (it’s exactly my kind of subject, BTW), Mary Anne, but I think (*) you might want to try to make it even better with some slightly more aggressive sharpening. I do not, though, agree with what you write about DOF: the dSLR can provide as deep a DOF (if you know to handle it), while the compact digicam is unable to give you a shallow one (which is a wonderful creative tool as you—with no doubt—will soon find out!). — db.
