Thank you, shu and TomD! I’m glad you like this portrait.

Abstract: no, I do not mind square crops at all (see my two other entries here). But in this case I found something—space—missing with whatever square crop I tried: I’m unable to explain what; just a gut feeling. — db.

Nice shot db.. The face is clear & has character. Always a contoversy over DOF, too much/not enough, "What cha gona do?"

looks like Henry, you, and I were writing comments at the same time :)
i have left a comment under your pending shot now. -Abstract

Thanks a lot, Henry, for commenting! What you think about the DOF may well be. I, OTOH, was just playing with my—then—new lens and checking out how small a DOF I could possibly get... ;-) — db.

while commenting, i assumed you might have cropped the original. with this being 100% crop, i agree cropping on the right will result in odd sized image. only a square crop could make this shot non-centered. but square crop is always love-or-hate thing for most photogs, so i always try to avoid suggesting it. :) -Abstract

Abstract: I have entered a possible crop of this image in «Pending». Please be so kind to check it and state your opinion/preference there. Thank you! — db.

Nice sharpness in the eyes and glasses, where it should be. I think a little more DOF would help, the right ear is light, and blurry and seems to attract my eye to it and away from his face. He looks like a happy young man and that was well captured. - Henry

Thank you, Abstract, for taking the time to analyze this image. I *was* looking for a crop before posting because I find the face somewhat too centered, but then found all my tries to either lead to too tight a framing or an, IMHO, odd relationship between height and width of the picture (just my own two cents, of course); I do, though, appreciate your making the suggestion. — db.

i like the little tilt and warm smile in this shot. also the dof to get eyes, specs, and lips sharp makes it technically perfect shot too. i personally will crop the shot on the right (because head is tilted towards left) and have more space on the left to make it non-centered. nice portrait nonetheless. -Abstract
