Thank you Rod & CJ! You're correct about the different interpretations. In a recent club competition, I thought I had 1st place with a photo of my granddaughter and it finished 5th. One I entered that I didn't think had a chance, took 1st. I guess it's difficult being objective about your own work (and photos of relatives)! :) - Henry

What snooty birds you have there - it looks like they're ignoring each other! Great detail on the gull Henry and the DOF and color contrast isolate the gull in the picture nicely. CJ

That's it Henry you have tamed the snow really well the gull has uninterrupted centre stage now:-)
Don't worry too much about different interpretations to your shots Henry as in all visual arts it's getting the viewer to have a reaction that's the hard part. It's not often the viewer will see the mindset of the artist in a particular work the important thing is we use our imaginations that's being triggered by the work we're looking at, if we do then that work has succeeded. I'm sure we all have lots of different feelings & interpretations of the Mono Lisa, all will be valid. One of the main purposes of art is to make us think & use our own imaginations, I'm sure most artists would be happy if their work did that as most would be surprised if many tuned in to their intent when creating the work:-)

Hi Rod, first, I wanted to have some space for the gull to be looking towards, rather than at the edge of the picture. Then I wanted to leave the duck in it, because besides the "sharp" versus "blur" isolation, I wanted to give the impression that the gull was SNUBBING the duck. I guess that didn't come across! :) - Henry

No flash, then you nailed the exposure on the gull it looks great. I wonder if cropping in to either side of the gull would help eliminate some of the snow glare.

Thank you Rod and Sue Anne. Yes, it's a duck's "bum". She just put her head underwater to grab something to eat! :) No flash Rod, it had been a mostly overcast day, but the sun was just breaking through some thin clouds. - Henry

That's a ducks bum Sue Anne, trust you to ask:-)
This looks like a flash shot to me, if it is then it works great on the gull but it blows out the snow. Maybe a natural light shot may have been better. Nicely done anyhow mate:-)

Very sharp looking gull. (what is that thing to the left in the water?)
