Thanks Carole:-)

VERY nice Rod - wonderful color contrasts and composition! CJ
Rod 26-Jan-2007 03:16
I don't think it tells us so much wot is blown but it tells us what is pure white as white measures 255 so we know that this area in a picy is blown. I don't use this for my shots as I can see what is wrong just by looking at me shots. Yes the blinking histogram will tell you the same thing. I just have the whole photo show up in review & I can normally get a good idea from that if the shots near the mark.Maybe because I always expose for the brightest part of the scene I don't normally have too many issues with BHs. If I have sky in the shots I make sure I tilt the camera up to favour the sky & lock the exposure recompose & shoot, if the foreground looks too dark in review I then set the camera on manual & shoot to let a bit more light in. Sort of like bracketing but just going the one way. It's funny I find looking at things like histograms & things spoils the mood of shooting for me......................plus I'm a bit dumb:-)

Rod,

When looking at the curves tool, I do see the numbers change but what numbers tell you that it was BH?

Also after you shoot a pic, doesn't the histogram show blinking that equal BH?
Rod 25-Jan-2007 12:46
Thanks all:-) Jano one of the ways (there must be others) to measure them in Photoshop is in the curves tool thingy, just to the left of the eye dropper symbols is a pencil you just click on that & move the mouse over the picy & it tells you the numbers & where on the curve it's situated. I haven't used it before but found it to check the picy out after Aamms comment. I think our eyes can do the job better because if nothing in the shot distracts your eye away from the focal point & everything about the picy looks OK then the measurements mean nothing in an aesthetic sense. As we know there are shots with blown highlights that look terrific & others look terrible, we just have to learn what works & when. ....That's the hard part:-)

Excellent picture...there are so many great things going for this picture..starting with composition, spot on exposure, color, contrast etc..etc. Just perfect. Great job Rod. - RK

Rod,

I read your BH post comments in CTF - I would say the white fancy house - I see no BH at all.... with the blue skies and puffy white clouds, everything looks perfect to me. (white is a hard color to photograph IMO)
ctfchallenge24-Jan-2007 12:40
Wonderful creative shot Rod. Rich
janewigginsphotography24-Jan-2007 11:55
Interesting about the bh measurements, Rod. I never knew that you could measure them as such. I do not see any bh here either, as the fence aam mentions on the left, you can clearly see a slight vertical line indicating a turn in the fence. Actually, as I stated, I don't think you could have done any better with this exposure. jano
Rod 24-Jan-2007 10:24
I'm just talking calmly but seriously & not in a worked up state Aammm, hence the smiley's & wot for me is good grammar in the post:-)
aam1234 24-Jan-2007 08:39
Relax mate, no need to get all worked up. You have a good point that not all monitors are calibrated (mine certainly isn't, though I tried few times) so maybe I shouldn't have commented on BHs.

This is one of your better work (yes I know you have many excellent photos). Cheers mate.
ctfchallenge24-Jan-2007 06:47
Thanks Jano & Aaamm & Brent:-) Aamm I don't know how your monitor is set up but there's no BHs here mate:-) I under exposed this shot to stop any BHs & brought it up in PP the brightest white in this shot measures 234, a BH measures 255. If you're trying to pay me back for when a long, long time ago I used to be mentioning BHs more than anyone else then that's a bit silly mate ( the reason I don't mention them anymore is we don't get many BH shots, most of the BHs were from the departed posters that you used to go ga ga over about their shots):-) If a BH is distracting the eye in a shot then it's a major fault, basically the only faults I comment on. If a fault doesn't distract the eye then it's not worth mentioning as that's just being pedantic & anal.
Here's a B&W conversion of this shot & you can see that the whites are greyish therefore not blown:-)
Brent, The asphalt has some cracks centre bottom & going up the middle of the road on the right but because I only sharpened the house & trees not the road it looks better than it really was:-)
Brent 24-Jan-2007 06:23
This shouldn't end up in the pending/Rod gallery, it's a keeper mate. Is the asphalt really that perfect downunder? It's so nice and black. Nice work.
ctfchallenge24-Jan-2007 02:15
Rod, you really got the set up here... wonderful shot and who would have thought that something like this would have worked, but it works beautifully here. Curves, lines, colors....amazing really. Great job. jano
aam1234 23-Jan-2007 19:58
What I liked most about the photo is the curvature of it. The road and the house itself. Basically the wide angle used. The exposure is *almost* spot on too (some BHs, Rod?)
Rod 23-Jan-2007 07:47
Thanks Mary Anne:-)
ctfchallenge22-Jan-2007 20:01
Nice exposure here, Rod. It's also wonderful to see blue skies and sunshine after all the cold gray days we've been having here.

Thanks all:-)
I agree wiv Abs, trying to interpret the topic is a great way to learn seeing
I took a few shots in AV mode I think it was 500sec @ F8 & then set it on manual to get some under exposed shots to tame the whites
Thanks again:-).

The rhythm of the pavement, the roof and the wall all work together to make a great shot Rod. Really cool!
Henry 22-Jan-2007 15:20
Excellent!
ctfchallenge22-Jan-2007 14:17
For me the most interesting thing in this shot is the balance of space between blue/beautiful/bright sky and black/dull asphalt. nice house, trees, perfect exposure, colors, etc., are just added bonus. also that is where the challenge theme plays its role. how many of us would have chosen this composition over the composition with the house at the bottom of frame, if it wasnt for the theme? -Abstract

Very nice Rod :) You did well with the exposure here as well as provoking interest. jano
