Christina, this is just amazing! I especially like the two curled petals in the upper left, and the negative space is just right to me, well balanced with the fiery colors. I would easily say this is perfect!

Great job with the lighting, making these petals glow this amazing fiery orange. I like this cropped version better. I agree with the others that there was a bit too much black negative space there. Going for a different less abstract effect, what do you think about using an extra but a less brighter light to give the dark area of the stem some detail? All in all you did a great job with this one :)

p.s.
Did you by any chance re-save your work as highly compressed jpgs? there is some slight pixelation in the photo.

lovely colors, nice composition, "smart" exposure. I would like to know the source and position of light set-up for this one. is it backlit?

A fantastic shot, Christina! I love everything about it! ~Sharon

Another great image Christina! Really does make me think of a firey pattern.

Thanks Jano, the original is linked to my personal galleries so you see my style page. I honestly don't know which I like better... I agree with everything everyone has said about both, and still seem to have a slim majority in favor of this one here... so here it stays.

Is it me but why does your original seem to have that extra umphhffff? Maybe it is because the orig has the white border and black gallery background? (perplexing). I like the original size better and the black neg space doesn't bother me a bit. In either event, this is a very strong image for this challenge! Awesome work. jano

No need to be sorry Christina as opinions are like bums, we all have one:-) The important thing is that you like it better wot we think is secondary. Your crop does look better as a picy but I think the first one was better for conveying repetitive patterns. It's a lovely shot either way:-)
Squared C21-Sep-2006 20:36
I guess I'm going to go with the slim majority here and leave this one up. Sorry Rod!

I like this better too Christina. There was something about the circular pattern of the black center recurving back toward the lower right corner that didn't seem right. Good Job! CJ

Well done.

I think the crop has taken us too close & it spoils the pattern & flow of the petals.

Beautiful shot, Christina. The patterns in the petals and around the dark center are nicely shown, and I don't think the dark area is a problem at all.

the repeating, flowing arcs of red in all those wonderful shades are great! I don't mind the large black space myself, however for this particular challenge it might further emphasize "patterns" vs "red flower" if you did crop a bit more off the bottom? beautiful, regardless - b.c.

Lovely colors Christina and nice composition although I think I agree with Abs about maybe cropping a little off the bottom up to about the first black part of the seed pod that's pointing up to the left - if that makes sense! Very pretty! CJ
Rod 20-Sep-2006 19:37
Wiv the dominance of the red backlit petals the black seems fine to me. This would work well anyway you cropped it, it's that sort of shot. Great work Christina:-)

Thanks Abstract. I'll play around with different crops. I hadn't thought of that big black part being a problem. I have had the "too much negative space" kind of comment before...

very very nice range of color tones here. although there is too much black at the bottom-right corner for my taste here. nice work, Christina. -Abstract
