Stadium High School, Tacoma, WA

This is a "close up" of Stadium Bowl, part of historic Stadium High School. The Bowl was designed for 40,000 people, has sat 70,000, and now seats 15,000 after mudslides have taken away some of the seating. Here is a link to the history of the school http://www.klippert.com/Stadium/History.html

This is a terrific shot, Erika! Whatever you've done to it it looks good to me. If you do want to do sharpening using the luminance channel only at some point, there is a tutorial here:http://www.pbase.com/ctfchallenge/image/31735245. It is Method 3. Really good work! ~Sharon

Great abstract image, the small amount of people work well to add scale to it. Nice work Erika.

Excellent! Good work Erika. You made the right choice to dump the other group of people. Good eye. jano

I didn't read Aaams comment either:-)

Didn't read any of the comments but just wanted to say that this is an outstanding photo Erika. Just superb! Good work!

Great capture and the people in it add the perspective of all the stadium.

I was just teasing, as I heard a few of the guys whining about girly subjects and girly winning photos... Not, that I was trying to shoot one thing or another. I have NO way of telling if a photo has a female touch, or a masculine touch, cept for the one of The Fly in the mirror... That well, was a guy shot... :)
ctfchallenge19-Sep-2006 18:10
Well, I'm not a guy but I like "manly" shots as well as "girly" ones! And I'd like this even without the man in it as it would make a nice abstract image all by itself. CJ
ctfchallenge19-Sep-2006 16:54
Thanks, Guys... I thought that you all would like a manly "architecture" shot...
ctfchallenge19-Sep-2006 15:50
This is great Erika! Great composition and perspective to emphasize the huge size of the stadium. CJ

Wow, killer photo for this challenge. I think you did the right thing by cropping out the large group but leaving a single person in for human interest.
ctfchallenge18-Sep-2006 21:46
Thank you all for your advice. I could not figure out how to use the luminance channel, but I lassoed the person, created a new layer, and just sharpened him up without sharpening up the stairs. It didn't work too well... If I went too far, he became speckled! (I also found a better balance for the grey tones of the stairs, the shadows are a bit darker, but you don't loose the grey color in this version.) Thank you! This is how I get better!!! ~Erika Ruth

p.s. re: sharpening. it might not make much difference here in the grey shadows, but have you ever tried sharpening just the luminance channel? (assuming whatever s/w you use allows that) I find that gives good results without introducing colour artifacts. - b.c.
ctfchallenge18-Sep-2006 20:42
this is terrific. I agree with the others about the lone person really adding to the shot. personally I'd probably have bumped the contrast up a bit, but your desire to maintain the greys here works too - b.c.

Great photo! I like the lone person that gives the whole thing scale and helps us "to see" what we are looking at.
* I think it might improve this phot if you boosted the contrast and the sharpness.

Thanks, It was hard to come up with the perfect crop, there were about 15 people in the bottom left corner that went to the chopping block. It was hard to decide if I should include any people, or just leave it as an abstract. ~Erika Ruth

Very good, and the human presence give the feeling of the space.-alex
