congratulations! Good idea and nice picture, they really bring us memories from the past!

I didnt suggest to "crop" more on the right. i was suggesting to "add" space to the right and then proportionally on the top of the shoes (subject would be on the bottom left corner). i think/feel right shoe (from the viewers side) is the main one (shows more chracter details, shoe-string and most importantly depth) and thus makes the shot...hence needs space around it. anyways, its merely a question of personal preferences. -Abstract

Thanks Abs for commenting. I had brought out more of the right shoe on the right per a previous suggestion. It may be a little tight but it doesn't bother me too much - my eye goes to the left between the two shoes so I think the comp is ok. Another suggestion was to simply crop more off the right which i'm not sure would work either. jano

very moody shot of shoes with lots of character. subject placement is awesome and oh lighting is excellent...actually, amazing.
i cant believe i am saying this about an old shoe photograph but a little breathing room around (or on darker right side with proportionally on the top) the subject would be good. i mean, crop is too tight on the sides. -Abstract

Thanks Mary Anne and Yvonne for your comments. I think what I like most about it is the shoe strings... they still seem "alive" or ready for play. I like Yvonne's title "Tied By My Mother" as these were as well but I hadn't even thought of that aspect. Kinda brings out extra meaning for me now! jano

Jano, I agree with the others in much preferring this version. B & W is perfect for this image, and the dark shadows and black background help create a very nostalgic mood. Nice!

Jano, I missed the shot with the box in the background, but I must say I really like this one. Yvonne

Thanks Rod for the two compliments there hehe jano

This looks great Jano, well done. I would say these shoes are about 30 years old:-) hehe

That's an amazing story, Jano. Was your Dad hurt? I would love to see photos of those, if you can locate them, and your other pair. They have so much history behind them for you that you couldn't help but make meaningful images of them. ~Sharon

Thanks Sharon and Lee! Always nice to good critiques by each of you :) Lee, it says 1900's 's 's 's... which means sometime in the 1900's.... not 1900. lol I'd be a silly fool to say any particular year hehe.

As I was thinking about the shoe challenge I remembered my mom gave me two pairs of my baby shoes.. a regular pair (these) and ones which are slippers with white fur around them and Indian beading on top. It states on the box the year she bought these, and I would have been age 1, so they are really antiques :0

Now if I could get my dad's shoe when he was a little boy, that would be a treat. My dad was standing in the farmhouse porch when lightning hit and literally tore the shoe off of his foot. In fact, the shoe, brown with those steel lace thingys, is actually torn from top ankle to toe. I'll try to find out what happened to it since the auction ..... jano

Wow! That does it Jano! I saw this before and had to agree with others that the background was distracting. But now this really packs some emotional punch. They are like a memory just barely emerging from the darkness of the past. Beautifully executed. Very, very nice! ~Sharon

Jano,

I did not know you were 106 years old! 8-)
Well done and great lighting.

Ok i brought out more on the shoe on the right. PS really isn't working for me well right now, so I may do another take tomorrow on this. I do have a couple w/o the box... i'll see if the texture is as strong. Otherwise, I will attempt to get rid of the box altogether. These were my shoes Rod :)

And of course I don't mind your critique Shu! My thoughts exactly actually after I posted.

Thanks CJ for your comments! jano

Really nice shot Jano & I too think the background is distracting as I can't tell its the box the shoes came in. I thought it was the floor with some other shoes.
Maybe shoot again with the box as a box or darken the background. Lovely shot though:-)
Whose shoes were they?
ctfchallenge20-Aug-2006 01:10
Nice, Jano! If possible, if you could bring out more detail in the shoe on the right as it is quite dark as it fades to black....either that, or perhaps a slight crop on the right-hand side would bring the image into balance. I think the image darkens too quickly there. (I hope you don't mind my critique....is is an excellent image!!) shu

Those are great Jano! Love the shoes and the composition, lighting, and b/w look really good too. CJ

LOL b.c., but I think I'll leave the date exactly as is ROFL. The box is the original J.C. Penney shoe box that the shoes came in... I have bells for the shoes too cause I guess I was rather a little run around back then :) I suppose I could darken up the box if it seems too distracting... just wanted to show my age NOT! jano

now that's a treasure, and a great shot, especially in B/W! though I wonder if that bag or box in the background would be better off slightly more OOF or otherwise less distracting? oh, and I may be wrong but should it be "circa" with 1 r ? - b.c.
