thanks Cat, for your comments. you're right, watching for reflections off the shiny black surface got a lot of my attention while composing. this was on my kitchen counter right beside a small window, so just a little shift of angle would bring a reflection of something in the room into view, even the window frame itself. I guess that's why people not as lazy as I would use a light tent or supplemental lighting :) thanks again for taking the time to comment

The angle and color contrast, and the gradient of grey to light grey work very well for me. DOF is personal preference. I find the lack distracting reflections very essential to this type of shot and you did a good job on that! -Cat

thanks Abstract. yes I noticed the OOF front edge afterwards, it was a handheld shot and I guess I should have taken time to use a tripod and more carefully get the focus and DOF spot-on. I took a series of photos as I said handheld and this was the one from the set where I felt I had the desired angle of subject vs. receding lines of the platter, DOF and lighting. If I get a chance perhaps I'll try to re-shoot and fix that... Thanks for the feedback!

very nice simplistic composition, vibrant colors and good choice of dof. although the out of focus tip of the front slipper bothers me quite a bit. -Abstract

thanks CJ, Sharon and Mark. FYI the background is a black lacquerware platter, also from Japan - b.c.

I like the bright colors against the grey background and the DOF works really well, too. Nicely done, b.c! ~Sharon
