Aam, thanks for the link. "Oriental" has probably different meanings in different parts of the world. The definition given by the i-cias site corresponds basically to what I wanted to say with "oriental" (perhaps excluding some of the North African countries as I am not quite sure if this kind of dance is typical for countires like Morocco and Tunesia). The web site says it is managed by a man from Norway. OTOH, Merriam-Webster's definition of "oriental" is "of, relating to, or situated in Asia" which means that it includes East Asia's countries as well as the Middle East. Actually, not really a problem which I care much about, but at least, I have learned that there can be some ambiguity in using the word "oriental". (I tried to avoid to call it "belly dance" because Oriental/Middle East dance is more than this). -Gerald

One site says "Encyclopedia of the Orient: the only encyclopedia of North Africa and the Middle East". This is the site:http://i-cias.com/e.o/

I don't have anything to back it up but I believe the term Orient used to be used for the Middle East area. I'll try to verify that.

Antidote, this is an interesting point. Only by reading your comment which caused me to do some Wikipedia research, I became aware that the term "orient" in English does not mean exaxtly the same region of the world than it does in German, where it does not include far eastern counties. In fact, the title "Middle Eastern Dance" would have been more exact.

very nice indeed. lovely sense of motion.
but why is it called 'oriental'? isn't it more 'middle eastern' type of dancing?

Thanks a lot for all the comments, Rod, Shu and Sharon. You are right, sometimes it is more exciting to keep a secret. Aam, why should I mind; I am sure this picture will look great as a painting. -Gerald

Looks great just as it is! No face adds to the mystery and the blur and color create excitement. shu

Agree with Rod. It never accurred (spelling) to me that we need to see the face. Looks great as is.
Rod 04-Aug-2006 22:06
I don't know about the face as the hair looks great too, I think this is just right.

My younger sis is into painting, I'll try to show her this pic for some ideas (after she comes back from her summer vacation). Would love to see this photo painted. Hope you don't mind Gerald.

I like it so much that I'd like to comment again. Hope you don't mind Gerald.

Beautiful colors and very appealing movement. It almost look like a painting. What makes it even more interesting is that there are in-focus parts like the belt area and shoes.

Again, simply beautiful.
