I agree too :) Thanks Britt for the comment.
Britt 16-May-2006 13:19
I seem to agree that a greater dof would have been of benefit to this shot.
aam1234 14-May-2006 05:22
Thanks RK, and glad you liked it.

Nice shot Aam. - RK

When i got the Olympus i was following the poor old dog around taking photos with the 50mm f2 lens and i loved the DOF i was getting and the almost surreal effect some of the photos had. I posted some in excitement on another forum and someone came back and asked why the snout of the dog was in focus but the eyes were out, i'd buggered up the focus by just an inch but it made all the difference.
aam1234 13-May-2006 11:23
Totally agree with you mates, guess I were too excited with the 50 at f2.0
Paul 13-May-2006 08:26
It always pains me to say this but i agree with Rod. I have a 50mm f2 lens i use with the Olympus E-500 and the DOF is identical to yours with that but you have to really concentratre to get what you want in sharp focus. As the title and the main aim here is the grapes i think the grapes in the hand should be in focus rather than the fingernails as hard as that might be. Because of the DOF in this shot the eyes are only drawn to one thing which is 3 fingernails. I'd actually like the main focal point here to be the 3 grapes in the other hand to the left, i think that would have made a very interesting shot and really drwan you in to the photo.
Rod 13-May-2006 06:27
It depends on wot your aim was Aammm. Narrow DOF for its own sake is just a novelty & really doesn't do much on its own. But if the DOF is used to enhance your focal point or vision then the vision is wot should be noticed not the DOF.
I think Jano is saying that your title suggests for the grapes to be the focal point & not the finger nails. I think she would have liked for at least one grape to be in focus.
I don't think that's much to ask for ......................isit:-)
Why don't you change the title to "Have a fingernail Uncle "The DOF will be perfect then:-)
aam1234 12-May-2006 23:14
You don't mind the DOF? the whole photo is about DOF. Am I missing something.
ctfchallenge12-May-2006 23:02
I don't mind the DOF, but would like to see at least one grape in focus :) jano
aam1234 12-May-2006 21:46
Oh, this photo wasn't staged, they really offered me grapes. Great kids, aren't they :)
aam1234 12-May-2006 21:33
Thanks Alexeig, finally somebody who understand me. Really, at f2.0 and at such a close distance it's practically impossible to nail the focus on the subject you want. DOF is just a few mm's deep, any slight movement and the focus point is thrown out.
alexeig12-May-2006 21:12
You know what? Since I have got 5D I got fond of shooting at large apertures and I am not alone as your picture suggests. DOF makes these grapes to look mysterious
aam1234 12-May-2006 14:58
They (finger nails) are cute, aren't they Rod :)
Rod 12-May-2006 12:28
The fingernails look great Aaammm:-)
aam1234 12-May-2006 12:25
Rod, I've never deleted a single pic (if memory serves) so comment away. Paul, summer is at full swing here.
Paul 12-May-2006 12:20
Where are you Aam?
Rod 12-May-2006 12:12
Can you confirm that this will stay the two weeks before I comment Aaammm?
aam1234 12-May-2006 11:56
Thanks Sue Anne. Agree with you Paul on the focus, wish it was on the grapes instead of the fingers. As for grapes they come in summer here. Thanks both for your comments.
Paul 12-May-2006 11:46
Sorry Aam but this is as far away from May as i can imagine. I don't really like the only focused part being the fingernails of the foremost hand and grapes to me are late summer/autumn fruits. Unless they're gooseberries and they're mid summer not early.
sue anne12-May-2006 11:07
Very nice effects DOF to shot the grapes. And I like grapes. :)
