Thanks Y & good girl doing B&W. It's B&W photography that sorts the men out from the boys. I hope it works the same by sorting the woman out from the girls:-)

Hi Rod, I like this shot, the angle of composition mainly. I think I prefer the black and white, but I am "into" black and white lately. Yvonne

Thanks for your main comment & tips Techo. This is a new guitar tarted up to look old, that's the world we live in:-)
Rod 07-May-2006 19:46
Don't tell anyone Techo I've just sent it to Alamy:-)
ctfchallenge07-May-2006 15:47
p.s.
This shot looks so good it would work great as an ad for this guitar. I can see it on a giant billboard now ;) hehe
Would sell like hotcakes!

Great shot! I like the perspective here the most. The black bk looks great , pretty much seamless but a few spots left there. If that was your intention, then leave it.
Otherwise, you can use the Selective Color Dialog(which I find most handy for these types of situations) and completely darken those blacks, either apply it to the whole photo or just the background. For the Blacks in the top picklist in that dialog, slide the bottom black slider to the right until you see those seems disappear.

Overall it's a very good shot. The lighting, the point of focus and DOF, looking really good. I do like the b/w for this guitar, but to serve this nice musical piece justice it's gotta be shown in color. I mean if this is an antique don't we all like to see it how it really is? it's not b/w in real life is it ;)

Ah Rod,

I like this color version much better. Beautiful and can see it the tinny easier than b/w/ :)
Rod 07-May-2006 04:42
Wiv a pitch black backdrop yer boofhead. The missus made me a set of about 6 different colours about a meter & half square. It's never big enough but I can clone the rest in. It all fits in a little bag, so while Josh made his coffee I threw the backdrop over the table as a table cloth outside under the awning wiv the natural light coming in from the left. These shots are really quite easy & nowhere near as hard as looking for & getting shots outside.
Thanks Paty:-) Awesome & inspirational a, Gawd I like you:-)
Thanks Ann:-) Sort of called a Dobro as Dobro is a brand name that has stuck to this type of guitar, like Hoover to vacuum cleaners. These are really called resonator guitars first thought of to try & make an acoustic guitar louder. There's a resonating plate in the round thing with the holes in, it's mainly played with a slide & or just finger picking & has a very distinctive sort of metallic sound. Jerry Douglas from Nashville makes very good & tasteful music with this type of instrument

Far better, why you ever thought the b+w was better is beyond me. I love the blue glow from under the pickup, and the warm brassy glow of the whole is fabulous.
How did you get the pitch black background?
ctfchallenge07-May-2006 03:41
These are totally awesome. I am just always amazed at both the technical and artistic execution of not only your photos but the rest of the on pbase, too. What an inspiration. Paty

Very wonderful! This is called a Dobro right? Cool. My husband plays clssical guiter, slightly different but still wonderful. Ann C

Thanks Mary Anne:-) here's the ahrtiiiiistic one.
ctfchallenge06-May-2006 22:13
Very nice, Rod. I love the composition, great DOF, and of course the marvelous color. I didn't see the b & w version, but I think I'd prefer this one.

Rod 06-May-2006 21:34
Thanks Carole:-) Seeing as though there looks to be a few more votes in the colour version I have made the ahrtiiistic decision to change it:-)
ctfchallenge06-May-2006 15:04
I like the color version with the nice warm golden tonesin it too but this works well if you were trying to portray "tin". "Tinny" could also refer to the sound, so the color version would be appropriate for this challenge too. Very nice! :-) CJ
Rod 06-May-2006 12:56
Thanks Oved:-) Yes this one should stay mate:-)
Rod 06-May-2006 12:54
Thanks Sue Anne:-) Yes I had to force the lens off F8 to get enough shutter speed for hand holding this shot. I didn't want too high an iso either as I couldn't do a reshoot because Josh was eager to get away & get ready for a gig ........It's back on F8 now:-)
ctfchallenge06-May-2006 12:52
Seeing the coloured version first I must say the B&W is defenitely more "tin" and as such fits the title prefectly :-) Now, will this one stay till tomorrow? :-) /Oved
sue anne06-May-2006 12:47
Beautiful Rod and I also like your color version (and the story behind it)
First time I saw a tinny guitar. :)

and I see you didn't shoot in your usual f8.0.....
Rod 06-May-2006 09:47
Wot a bleeding boofhead, brass aint tin isit. But in B&W it looks like tin dunit.
If they hadn't painted the resonator brass colour maybe chrome I would have done it for colour.
We're off to the pub tomorrow to see him play it, it sounds really good. Thanks mate:-)
Paul 06-May-2006 07:18
About bloody time, this is a cracker and i actually don't mind the black and white. Why black and white though? The brassy colour of these guitars is great.
Rod 06-May-2006 06:24
Thanks Carole, yes the round thing with the holes in is called the resonator & it's made of metal with a thinner plate inside we would call tin, as in a tin can made of thin metal. The body is made from brass. The sound is tinny too, sort of metallic sounding.
ctfchallenge06-May-2006 06:14
I like it, but is it really Tinny? This your son's? Nice perspective, lighting and B&W Rod! :-) CJ
