Thanks guys... Armin, Jano... its the top portion of a tikki lamp and what you see is the wick... well whatever was left of it anyway... rest of its all rotten/burnt/broken away... someone tried to pull some fibers out of it at one point, unsuccessfully. So the few strands which came out remained in there. --Cat
