Depth of Understanding *

Houston

Not to bore you with stories, but this is a real resolution for me that came about this morning. I went to St. Bernadette to take some pictures in the sanctuary. I was setting up for this shot when one of the ladies came over and said how lovely it should be because of the shadows. "Huh," I said. She said that Christ's hands cast two shadows which represent the father and the holy spirit. Well, I have been staring at this crucifix for more than 25 years (even noting the double shadow) and never made the connection. So the resolution that came to me (and to which I am committed) is to think and study more deeply.

Now the real reason I took this picture is that I was wondering where Christ was actually looking. I walked around until he was looking right at me. Well, it is in the seats that our dear friends Bill and Maria have occupied for many years during the 7:30 am mass. And it makes perfect sense that this has paid off for Bill. The lord was definitely looking down on him (and the University of Texas Longhorns) when he and his son attended the Rose Bowl last week.

I changed the crop as suggested, which does make it nicer. Also worked the sharpen to add a little detail to the face. Thanks for the suggestions. john+

Great lighting for the shadows! I think a closer crop would do well for this image, especially towards the bottom as you would not lose any shadow effects there. I would personally like to see more of the face so that's why I suggest the closer crop. Love your interpretation, sentiment, and experience when you saw this image. Yes, better understanding in the world would be a beautiful thing! Well done, John! jano

I think the face looks fine and the double shadows of the hands and arms are very nice. :) ~Britt

Apologies to those outside the United States, I forgot that most countries don't have collegiate football. I tried to lighten the face a little, but it seemed to come out looking "enhanced", so I left it alone. Thanks very much for the suggestion. -John

The last sentence seemed quite clear to me, unlike the Mona Lisa Christs eyes were fixed on one spot & John found that spot by walking around. When he found the spot it turned out that his friends sat in that very spot & his friends were lucky enough to attend a finals football game called the Rose Bowl & their team the Longhorns won. Thank Christ:-)

This is a very serious resolve, nice picture and commentary. For me (and I suspect for a few other participants) the last sentence is a bit too cryptic. Who are Longhorns? What is Rose Bowl? Why Christ was looking at your friend?
* some PS work on Christ face may lessen the shadows which are too deep IMHO
