Rod, I managed to follow your instructions for using the magic wand to select the sky area, but I can't find any blur command...just the blur tool. Are they one and the same? The blur tool really didn't make any appreciable difference in that noise in the sky.

Thanks, Rod. I'll give it a try. I never seem to get that magic wand thing right, so I'll probably end up using the blur tool.

Do you have a magic wand in PSE? If so then try a tolerance of about 20 or 30 & click it on the sky it makes a selection. If it doesn't get it all then press shift while you keep on clicking until all of the sky is selected. Then you can use the blur command to smooth out the sky. If this is a bit much to follow then if you have a blur tool then you can just go around the sky with that keeping away from any of the water & pier.
Thank you both. Now, can anyone tell me how to get rid of the noise in the sky? (I have to admit that the shot was very underexposed, and I had to do a bit of PSE work on it.)

Mary Anne - the shadows of the pier on the water are outstanding, especially as they rise up to the tide. *The lonely shadow on the pier = good capture! jano
