The Temperature of Glass *

Nebraska

I was beginning to think my brain block on this challenge was getting the better of me and the cat was looking more and more tempting to me. With all of these aquarium/fish pictures I was having fantasies of how well she could swim.....

Hmmm....well I guess I should have breakfast now and fry up something that tastes like my footsie. :0 Still love me Pappy? ~Britt

Britt me favourite girl, how do you know the post below was from me? :-)

This is really lovely, Britt. I especially like the light through the red one and the softening is very nice. ~Sharon

Thanks for the virtual-making-me-feel-better-nod. I will definitely get fired up when I spend an hour on my arthritic knees (and three hours with ice bags afterwards) to get a shot like this, then proudly emailing it to my fans (hehehe my mummy and daddy). Thanks for the reinforcements. I was about to cancel my plans to visit down under! I was afraid to run into the man with the whip in his hand. (Don't worry, Pappy, I still want to have breakfast with you and your lovely wife in that warm kitchen. ~ Britt

Gawd Britt has some fire a, I like that:-) Let me explain young lady, post processing is fine as long as you can't see it. Know wot I mean then. Shots that show the post processing end up looking like graphics & not photos. Your lovely shot here looks like a photo, so it doesn't matter what post processing you did. There now, all is revealed & clear init:-)

It's beautiful, Britt! One of the best! shu

If he's a purist, then the BUGGER shouldn't have cloned his BLEEDING hand out of his frame-in-mid-air shot! Hehehehe...just kidding darlin! ~Britt

Rod is an ol purist, that's all - so never mind :-) ~ Armin

Did I miss something on post processing here? I read the rules and guidelines and it says, "Post-Processing -- Do whatever you like to your photo and the voters will decide if it's too much." I only made a minor adjustment on this. Kind of like making an original black and white, but only in some areas. Are we not supposed to do anything to them? If you would like, I can post the original on my PBase so you can see it there. ~Britt

Oh no!!! our Britt did some Photoshop & I fell for it..........................I need to lay down:-)
The main thing is it doesn't show & is still a beautiful shot.

I set this up with a translucent disk for a soft diffusion of light behind the temperature guage; used no flash. Post processing I put a slight antique tone on it except in the areas of the colored balls and temperature disks to give it a tad softer look, as opposed to the "crystal" look that glass gets when light hits it. I just thought this looked nicer. Thanks again for the nice comments and I am glad that it turned out as well on screen as it did in my brain. ~Britt

Nice work, Britt. These theremometers can be very photogenic but, it's rare to see one done with such softness. Did you do a gausian blurr on the background at all, to achieve that softness? Great shot. Markjay

What I really like about this photo is the softness of the background and color and just the right amount of light to pull this off. How did you do the lighting and background?? Very nice :) jano

Thank you Armin and Yvonne, I am sure my cat thanks me, too. I did try to shove her head into the large end of a hurricane lantern. She didn't seem a bit pleased. So this seemed the best alternative to water and angelfish. :) ~Britt

I'm quite happy you took this lovely shot instead of forcing your poor kitty into an aquarium. Beautiful.

Britt, I agree with Rod (for once) You did a great job with this shot, I tried one yesterday at a friend's house, but it is not half as good as this one. Lovely job. Yvonne

Thanks much, Rod. I wanted a close shot of the temperature bubbles huddled in the bottom of the cylinder. If you want to see a picture of what a whole galileo temperature guage looks like you can go to:http://lib1.store.vip.sc5.yahoo.com/partshelf/galliqtherfr.html I am in no way pushing that site, it's just the first one doing a search that shows a good picture of the whole thing and explains how it works. Mine was at 78F when I was taking pics. A bit balmy for my tastes!
Thanks again for your nice comments! ~Britt

Gawd this looks really good, the soft lighting & wonderful colours look at the beautiful light around the blue & green wotsits. The tones of the glass are superb it seems to be frosted glass in places & yet the objects inside are sharp & clear. Bugger the fish shots, I will just look at this for ages. Great shot Britt.
PS. How does this thing work?
