"Frightening isn't it? " SCARY, but a great image.

Thanks Lonnit and Techo. Lonnit this is still the original shot but i'd missed off a fraction of my ear so i added a bit of a border to the left and cloned in the bit of ear i missed off. On one of the monitors here i can make out the cloning but on the other i can't. It's surprising what just a millimetre of space can make to an image.

Sorry for not replying sooner. I've been mostly away from regular computer station this past week. I really like the new crop and the contrast and sharpness... you did a great job with the tweaking.

I guess this must be a completely new shot b/c I see a whole ear. I also didn't really notice this shot enough to open the thumbnail before, but this time around it caught my eye and I thought to myself, "How did I miss this???". Very good job - love the eye! ~ Lonnit

Jano, thanks for your comments below, i thought i'd responded to you but i hadn't. I tried a crop close to my head to lose as much ear as i could. It looked bizarre but that might probably be because i was used to the original version so much.

New ear, eye should be the same
Paul 21-Aug-2005 10:03
Bugger me ear. I went out drinking with Mike Tyson.
Rod 21-Aug-2005 08:36
Hic to that. That's a lot better now, but yer bleeding ear hole has disapeared again. How many Fosters have you drunk?
Paul 21-Aug-2005 08:31
Aw bluddy hell. You're right, all i did after rebuilding the ear was to do the USM but it's over sharpened and now looks a bit crook. I'm going to go back to the original and have a think and a drink....
Rod 21-Aug-2005 08:06
You might be good at ear jobs but look wot you've done to the eye. It looked great after the first sharpen now it's really over sharpened & the tones have disappeared, maybe into yer ear hole.
Paul 21-Aug-2005 01:26
Ere, ere. I might put up fences for a living but on a sunday i sometimes dabble in plastic surgery. Not perfect but those who haven't seen the first might not notice. Whaddya think?

Come'on Paul - let's see a crop and cut ya ear off! I think it would work for me. jano

Nice shot! I also agree be nice if there were even 1/16" space at left. How about cloning and "craeting" the missing ear? Or crop the ear out completely? That's my Saturday/Sunday look too! - Tom

Great shot, Paul. And I'm not bothered by the ear at all. I think the composition needs that white along the left side, but it also needs to be broken, and the ear does just that. I'm going to be taking an art class in design beginning next month, so maybe I'll learn something more about composition that I can pass along. In any event, I'm amazed by the sharpness of the eye, as my self portraits never seem to be quite in focus. Good job here.

Very nice Paul! Close ups of yourself are hard to accomplish and you've done an excellent job here. As far as the ear problem (which is only a slight distraction IMO), and since you are satisfied with this image, an alternative would be to crop off from the left and eliminate the ear altogether. In my meager attempt to hold a piece of paper up against the image, it would work for me, thereby just have the focus more on the eye. Just a suggestion. jano

Thanks alex, i don't know what i'm going to do with this bloody ear, i really like the look i've got here but this is as it came out of the camera as far as being able to crop is concerned. I really need a couple of millimetres more. I think if i cropped off any of the ear it would look daft.
alexeig20-Aug-2005 10:15
Great look, Paul. I would keep the frame off the ear though.

Thanks all,
Lee the clipped ear is a real pain, i never noticed it and the reshoots i've tried haven't captured the feel of this morning when i took the shot while still a bit muddle headed after too much grape juice last night:>)

Rod, my ugliness is my signature in any colour you like. I know what you mean about rotation but playing with this even with a slight move makes it look off for me, i think it must just be the shape of me bonce.

Techo, i've sharpened the eye using a tool i never knew existed, it's sharp now i reckon. It's harsh this b+w isn't it?

The wife hates this. I'm gpoing to blow it up and print it out:>))

Indeed a very nice shot!(*) I would just like to add, some selective sharpening for the eye and just a very small tad of extra contrast.

-Techo :)
Rod 20-Aug-2005 02:58
There you go Paul you have found a reason for shooting in B&W. Imagine how ugly this would look in colour mate. I don't know why but I seem to feel a little rotate to the left is needed. Good shot.
ctfchallenge20-Aug-2005 02:46
Nice. * I wish your ear was not cut of slightly. theFly
