Thanks Shu, i like your comment about the symbolic door knob. Gold as a way to escape the blues, wonder if it works? Hmm
ctfchallenge12-Aug-2005 04:12
I like the way you sprinkled the blues throughout the shot. Rarely do I find an image where the elements are so interesting, I just want to study them. My eye lingers on the door knob and it becomes symbolic as a way to escape the blues. This is a marvelous image, Paul. Shu

Ta Abs, nice being able to do self portraits, i can stay at home:>)

i thought, i did leave a comment here. oh well, looks like there is nothing left to be said.
very thoughtful and conceptual shot. almost looks like out of some art movie. wtg Paul! my kinda blues will have a scotch bottle, not a coffee mug though. just kidding. ;)
impressive work! -Abstract

Thanks all,
I've tried to change the yellow and red on the lp cover to blue but it looks a real mess so it'll have to stay. Jano, i tried a tighter crop to lose that bottom of the door but found that it just made the gap come a bit closer to me with each crop as if it was determined to appear on the photo and as i wanted the blue door to be the first thing to catch the eye i didn't want to keep cropping and losing some of it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Paul a really nice take on the challenge....Yvonne

This is nice Paul.
janewigginsphotography09-Aug-2005 03:09
I had to look at this shot again and again before commenting. This is really thought provoking in so many ways. If I would suggest anything I would just crop off the tiniest bit off of the left of the photo to eliminate the seeming gap between floor and door. Otherwise, you have certainly individually interpreted the topic and made it your own with this great shot. jano
ctfchallenge07-Aug-2005 15:17
Paul, wonderful interpretation of the topic. Mood and the blue do go hand in hand. Don't worry about extra light... These kind of shots work very well in low light too.. -Cat

I put up the shelves so i wouldn't guarantee the true vertical of the support. The door was put in by the builder so i'd hope it was true.

As for the colour of the lp cover i might have a play around and see what i come up with. Not tonight (sunday) as it's cricket on the radio and copious amounts of alcohol.

Pedro...maaate, thanks for the comment, wine would have been great but it was 11.30 on saturday morning, not even i start then although thinking about it some fine wine might help the muse along:>))))
ctfchallenge07-Aug-2005 03:25
Ok Rod, I won't say anything about the verticals ;) I take my words back I don't think there is a sign of WA distortion if that's the correct way to call it, it's just the angle of the shot that makes things that should look vertical leaning a bit. I've been reading some about the subject on the DP forums and various sites and the info given does seem to differ sometimes. So I read there is Perspetive distortion , and Wide Angle distortion which causes Pincushion or Barrel distortion? please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Here's one other site that shows various correction techniques
http://www.fredmiranda.com/distortion

And perhaps it's best if we want to discuss the topic further, we should start it in the forum?

-Techo :)

After reading Gerald’s comment the shot would have been better without the red & yellow. Can you just isolate that part of the album in your photo editor & change the colours. No worries if you can't as the shot still works, but I can see a lot more power in the shot if that album was blue. Pedro the word wine with blues is an oxymoron mate:-)
Guest 06-Aug-2005 13:33
Very nice Paul, nice mood... I would prefer instead of a coffe cup a bottle of wine and a wine glass, though... but that's me, ok?
Paul 06-Aug-2005 11:38
No worries Aam, i'll learn from what folks say as always for the future but this will stay as it is.
aam1234 06-Aug-2005 11:08
Don't touch it Paul. Keep it as is.
Paul 06-Aug-2005 10:43
Thanks Gerald, i was probably being a bit too clever for my own good, the record is Out Of The Blue but i can see how the brightness of the red and yellow draws the eye away.
ctfchallenge06-Aug-2005 10:28
Excellent! You managed to capture blues in every meaning of the word. (Only because of the *: I am not sure whether the yellow and red parts on the cover in the middle are a bit distracting.)

Ha ha. No wonder why Emma decided to marry you. Poor girl (just kidding!).
Paul 06-Aug-2005 07:18
I'd be pulling my hair only...well...you know.......
Canon DSLR Challenge06-Aug-2005 07:06
opps, that's me, aam1234 below.
Canon DSLR Challenge06-Aug-2005 07:05
I bet she is pulling her hair right now, saying "what have I done!". ha ha, j/k of course.
Paul 06-Aug-2005 06:15
Emma just reminded me that yesterday was our 17th anniversary of when we first went out, no wonder it was so easy to feel down:>)

Hope she doesn't read this...........

What's a vertical Rod? Some kind of blind. No worries as we have timber venetians.
aam1234 06-Aug-2005 05:39
Have to admit that this photo touches on a nerve. See, my girlfriend is spending her vacation in Italy. I know how sweet talking, handsome some of these guys can be. It makes me feel as Paul is doing here. Well, not literally :)

That shouldn't take away from the supremely beautiful, and extra expressive photo Paul is posting here.
Rod 06-Aug-2005 05:11
Excellent concept & shot for a boofhead. It looks terrific. If anyone mentions verticals I will scream:-)
aam1234 06-Aug-2005 04:39
A-ha. Shall play it right now. Thanks.
Paul 06-Aug-2005 04:01
Thanks Techo, i wish there had been more light to use here but this time of the year the front of the house where the study is gets no sun at all and all i have is a reading light in the room so had to make do with that. I'll have a look at that site but am not a huge PS fan (only because i don't know how to use it properly) :>)

Aam, the lp you're thinking of is Nothing Like The Sun
aam1234 06-Aug-2005 03:49
Hi Techo. I tried to look for that WA "thing" you are referring to, but can't seem to see it. Care to elaborate on that please.

About Sting album. Not sure this one is my favorite. My favorite is the one that has "Englishman in NY". What's the name of that album.

Paul, you have a winner photo right here.
ctfchallenge06-Aug-2005 03:24
I echo aam's words. A most unique interpretation of the theme. You've added another memorable self portrait to the ctf gallery. And I can't help mention I too am a Sting fan. So there ya go :)

At the wide end there is the visible distortion, it doesn't bother in this shot but if you ever want to give it a try there's a good tutorial on how to fix it using PS

Paul 06-Aug-2005 02:59
Thanks Aam, i knew the blue door would come in use one day. Yeah, great album that Blue Turtles.
aam1234 06-Aug-2005 02:19
Oh my. That's a great interpretation of the subject. Extremely well done Paul! Very artistic, and very human. I better shut up now.

Except, that Sting album is one of my all time favorite of his. Did I mention how great this photo is?
