In the background, the Smith Memorial to Pennsylvania officers from the Civil War.

Foreground, the stump of a tree that went down in one of the two "thousand year" storms last fall.

Why the boy and his father thought this was a good place for batting practice, I don't know.

off topic comment, but... dangerous endeavor...with soccer shoes the kid could have been slipped right down the stump...

Here's the play by play, Abs: Kid and father come from a soccer game on the nearby field. Father decides baseball may be a better sport for the kid and takes him for batting practice. Father seems to have the theory that standing in a tilted batter's box will help his swing. Father, who is off screen to the left pitches a tennis ball. Kid doesn't have the arm strength to swing with his hands together. He swings (righthanded), I shoot. He misses by a mile. Another pitch; he misses again. They leave, declining my offer to send them a copy of the picture.

btw i didnt understand his swing...right hand is at bottom so if i understand correctly...he was facing you, you threw the ball, he missed the shot and you clicked the photo...right?

Abs, you're right, it is better when I remove the stump.
Before I took this, I was photographing the stump; when the batter took his position on the stump, I didn't change my view - I still saw the stump, now with a boy. But this challenge is about proportion, not about stumps, so the stump is gone.

Excellent. I agree with Abs, cropping out the bottom would emphasize the disproportion.

i like this one, especially the ball.
btw, you can emphasize the disproportional feeling by croping from the bottom. that space kind of gives away the distance between subject. just my 2 cents. -Abstract
