Cheers*

Just messing around with my in-laws and i saw the opportunity to try a slightly sidelit portrait. Having just been reading Understanding Exposure and these sidelit portraits I slightly underexposed to get the shadow effect - not sure if I got it right but any brighter and the highlights blew out completely. This is a personal shot but is very representative of my mother-in-law! B&W avoided a lot of distrcation the kitchen background.

I keep looking at this because, for me, it is an eye-catching image. Very, very nice. Shu

Thanks for the feedback - I shot the original in RAW so am tempted to go back and have another go at the processing. Glad the composition worked though.

I like the photo, and I think you did a good job under difficult lighting circumstances, although I agree with Rod that the highlights are a bit too bright. Next time, maybe you could underexpose a couple of stops and then increase the contrast in post-processing. The b & w works well here...good choice.

Well done Pickle a very good shot & for choosing B&W. The highlights are still a bit too bright for her face. This bright lighting works well for back lit shots but for side lit shots an exposure in between would have done. IMO:-) of course
