Brian.... The shallow DOF works well for this image. It gives the viewer something to think about as to what is beyond the barb wire.

DOF may not be as deep to show the field, but increased just enough to get "all" of the wire in focus. I dont want to know what's there in the field. However, I understand the problems faced in the field. -Cat

I really like the fact that you have no idea of what is actually in the field and you whole attention is drawn to the barbed wire wrapped around the post. On what appears to be a nice sunny day you have a bucolic scene with a real touch of menace. If it was just one strand of wire for instance it could be to keep a sheep in but this is a nasty, rusty and possibly dangerous spot.

In the field I considered increasing DOF but I wanted to be sure that a shallow DOF illustrated that the barbed wire was preventing access to the field. In camera it looked good but, perhaps Cat is right that the background should be a bit more discernible. Thanks for the comments Nugar and Cat.

Keen eye. Composition surely helps keep the focus on the subject. Since there is harldy any thing else to distract in the background, I would have liked to see a little more DOF. But it gets the message out as is too. -Cat
The sharp focus on some of the strands of barbed wire really emphasises the actual sharpness of the wire and i'm intrigued as to what's growing in the field. Also the rusty strand in the centre of the shot makes an interesting contrast with the slightly less old wire. The more i look, the more i see and would like to see. The line of trees in the background and the wonderful detail on the old timber post. I like this a great deal.
