Leaning Through *

Cocoa Beach, Florida USA

It was late afternoon of a chilly, overcast day, but it was my only chance to get some surfing photos. I've used Levels and USM to try to approximate what I saw then.

Rod, the photo was taken from a long high fishing pier. My nephew, who is a surfer, took me there but didn't go in that day because he said the waves weren't very good and the place was too crowded with people who weren't following proper surfing etiquette. I never even thought of trying b & w, but it might work, as the light was not good when we were there and the water didn't have nice colors. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm always disappointed if I don't see any comments, good or bad. The giving & receiving of votes at the end is the part I like least about these challenges. Where were you when you took this shot? As it looks like a high & close to the surf position. Maybe a crop would give this impression. Have you tried this in B&W as somehow I think it might work well with this shot?

Thanks, Rod. All things considered, I thought the image was fairly good and certainly on-topic with the diagonals...and have been surprised at not getting any comments, just as you were about the lack of response to your now withdrawn entries. However, I liked this one well enough (and am stubborn enough) to leave it on anyway.

As for whether it's necessary to end up with what my eye saw vs. working for some other effect, I guess I'm still at the stage where I lean towards realistic images in my own photos, although I can appreciate some of those that convey a different vision from the photographer.

What you actually saw isn't really relevant to your final shot Mary Ann. unless you are trying to be documentary & historically correct. The main point when you aim the camera is to get the basics for a good shot you may have in mind. Post processing helps us with that vision. You got great diagonals in this shot, well done.
