I like this landscape photo very much. Dorys should be very proud :)

Gawd I had the forum shot in mind. No BH in this one.
Rod 20-Mar-2005 19:19
Looking good Dorys, well done:-)
Rod 20-Mar-2005 19:17
Very good Dorys, lots of pop & a blown highlight:-)

Ok, i went back and added a layer with a bit of contrast and reduced it to 47% opacity over the original. i think it's a bit better.

rod-i did use a nd gradient filter on the original pass to bring out a bit of drama in the clouds. some like it, some don't. i do.

as for my choice of iso-it was chosen on purpose. the days out here were very dark and cloudy and my handheld shooting expertise is minimal at best. i really wanted as much speed as possible with a small f-stop for dof. the camera was set to apeture priority and i played with the iso until i felt the speed was fast enough for me. was it right? maybe not...i'm still learning.

after all this discusson i think my title is more appropriate than i had anticipated! LOL

Rod: Yes, you can get quite clean shots with the 300D at iso400; but the same picture would be *much* cleaner at iso100 (and 1/100 sec. would be easy to handheld at wide angle 35mm). I wanted to know if there was a reason to using the settings dorys used (hoping I could learn something). It seems, though, she just forgot to set iso (as aam1234 suggests); or, Rod, do you *really* think she was drunk *again*...?? ;-))) Lovely image, BTW — db.

dp what is the detriment to taking a wide angle shot at 1/400s f/10.0 @ iso 400. Is it so Dorys could have used a smaller aperture? I think you get clean shots on a Rebel at this iso.
Guest 18-Mar-2005 23:53
db-you actually expect me to be able to answer that question? LOL
aam1234 18-Mar-2005 23:20
She forgot! :)

Dorys: What's the reason behind taking a wide angle shot at 1/400sec and iso400? — db.
aam1234 18-Mar-2005 21:06
This is potentially a agreat photo, so won't let Uncle Rod get away with the comment. I still think it's flat. One way to take advantage of the photo is to....cut it in half! think about it ;)

If I was you Dorys I would do little or none of the suggestions below.Put green in the bush's what a terrible idea & would just ruin the feel of this shot. More contrast would would also ruin the beautiful subdued light. The soft lighting is superb with the sun highlighting small sections of the shot. To make the fence rails stand out more would take the eye away from the scene in front of us as the fence is not in the correct position to be the main lead in for the shot. As it is now my eye has no trouble going into the shot via the gravel path & up & over the fence to the lovely lighted scene. The only suggestion I would have is when you do adjustments in PS select the sky & then inverse the selection so you only shadow & highlight & or sharpen the foreground. The PS treatment has made the cloud on the upper left harsh with pure white in it & looks too contrasty & a bit digital, whereas the foreground looks just perfect. I would bet the sky straight from the camera would look perfect for this shot. Well done Dorys on staying on the wagon:-)

Very nice colors and scenery dorys!
aam1234 18-Mar-2005 17:11
Or maybe play with the sky, make it darker. See which you like most.
aam1234 18-Mar-2005 17:08
I think if you could, somehow, play with the rails then the photo will come to life. IMO, the rails are like the guides to this photo. Enhance them if you can.

Idem, this has great potential. Try to bring out more green in the trees/bushes
Guest 18-Mar-2005 16:16
Thank you both. That is exactly the feedback I need to see! I agree about the contrast. I did add a lot with shadows/highlight in PSCS and was worried it was going to look too fake if I did more. It was a very dull cloudy day. I'll see what I can do with it over the weekend.

Agree with Gayle. When I first saw the photo I liked it, but felt something was missing. Then I read Gayle's comment and knew what it was. It needs a bit of a contrast, to bring this beautiful photo to life.

Dorys, now that I know it's yours.......this photo is fantastic. Well composed, excellent exposure, great cloud formation. However, it needs a contrast adjustment...this will make the light absolutely shine. Right now it's a little flat, but it has all the ingredients there, it just needs you to "mix" them.

Thanks Gayle. Now I'm in trouble though. Rod's going to find out I forgot my name and accuse me of being drunk again. lol

This is really beautiful. Wonderful colours and light.....but no name on it. Could we please know who the photographer is?
