Caleb Smith House (*)

Smithtown, NY

This is a photograph of the Caleb Smith historical house and museum.

I live in Commack, a part of Smithtown, New York, USA. In 1663, Richard Smith (for whom Smithtown is named) purchased land from the Nesaquake Indians which he and his family farmed for many generations. In 1817, his descendant Caleb Smith built this house on that land in Commack, about 1000 feet from the home in which I currently reside. Caleb's grandson Robert Smith sold the land in the early 1900's, and in 1958 the house was moved to a nature preserve about 2 miles away, where it is looked after and maintained by the local historical society.
