Powerful image

Hi Mary Anne. I rather like this crop. Not sure if this photo would've worked better with a completely black backdrop. If you wanted to get this same lighting effect, the dark shirt and hair maybe would've blending in into the backdrop too much and natural settings can sometimes offer a positive impact on the emotion you're trying to bring out. As in this case, looks to me that a lady is standing outside, away from the conflict, she found a spot where she could let it all out.

Thanks, Abs. I'm wondering, however, if the image is too tightly cropped. Sometimes I think I go too far with the dictum to "fill the frame with the image." Altho in this case it seemed too distracting to leave more of the background, which is kind of busy, but I think I would have preferred backing off a bit. I've got to get myself some type of dark backdrop material.

Mary Anne, i like the way you have used every bit of the frame in composition and i agree with you that a little noice helps (in some cases) b&w shots. -Abstract

Mary Anne, I think in B&W noise actually looks good.

Yes, now I see it, it's the focus. Still a good shot though.

Actually, I think the focus is the problem. Very shallow DOF, and only the back hand is in focus.

Rod, I agree about the need for more contrast, but when I played around with it in PSE, the "noise" became too unacceptable. This was shot in rather dim light at ISO 100, and the G3 is notorious for lots of noise at anything above 50. Maybe I'll try it again with better light.

On my revisits to this shot the background is not really an issue, but a tad more contrast may be good..........I think:-)

Very nice shot Mary Anne, I would up the contrast a bit & try & blur or darken the background to make it less distracting. That's how I see it on me newly calibrated monitor:-)
