Great angle. And, the small house to the right is needed for balance IMHO

Your thinking was perfect. You accomplished exactly what you set out to do. We are led directly to the house. Now, the question would be, "Why?". What is it that you want to notice about the house? See? You used the sign as a leading line to support the house as your subject. However, the house was not your subject, was it? Of course not, because this challenge is signs, not houses. ;) Your subject was the sign. So now that you've selected the subject, you want to compose the picture so that the other elements support the subject.
If you crop out the house by cutting the shot between the house and the tree in frontof it, the eye instead zooms down to the end of the sign and then bounces back and continues to stay on the sign, bouncing from one end to the other as if you were watching a tennis match. :)
Your eyes won't get mad at you or disappointed when there is nothing important down there. ;) The first time you look they will go check out that tree to see if it is important, determine it is safe to ignore it, and then go happily bounce around the sign. :)

Thanks Lonnit for your comment. My thinking was that the direction of the sign and the grass would lead the eye to the house. Maybe without the house the eye will hit...nothing. And that could be disappointing in a way (for the eye). Again, appreciate your comment and will try your suggestion.

The sign is good but the background building is a big-nothing distraction. If you crop just before the building it's a much stronger composition and overall image IMO. ~ Lonnit
