Bamboo scaffolding is always arresting, and never more so than today at lunch.
I was walking back to the office when I noticed 15 men putting their web
around a residential building. Fortunately, I arrived while this man was
only 30 feet up because when I returned 20 minutes later,
everyone was at the 10th floor level and out of range of my 3x zoom.
I think of complexity as a combination of individuality and integration --
discrete components assembled into something larger, and generally more useful,
than the individual parts.
So, scaffolding may only have two components -- bamboo and nylon lashings --
but it can be arranged to scale tall buildings, support the weight of men,
withstand typhoons (usually), and wrap around corners and
outcroppings like a latticed exoskeleton.
In the midst of all this tall grass is a third component -- the man who puts it all together
for other men to follow and build upon.
