Being a broccoli lover, this looks as good as it tastes YUMMY all the way:-)

¡Gracias Lucem!

Sorry my m8 Rod, untill you can fix the date on your cam, you can't bash my friend Nugar photo (teasing you Rod).

I don't know how people look/approach photos, but I look at them as a whole. Not what's this, why's that. A good example would be Jude photos. They are so simple (and some fools might think they are easy) yet they are immensely artistic.

Sorry for the detour, but I really like this photo.
Rod 30-Oct-2004 05:31
Oh my gawd, extreme highlights are useful in some shots as Judes work testifies, but her highlights normally come from a white background. Yours Nugar comes from a black background which makes them yucky never to be seen in photos blown highlights. Change the background to white & your BLHs might look acceptable. Until this is done I will never talk to you again...........Unless you vote for one of me shots of course:-) & Nutcase, don't side with Nugar, as I've been looking at DSLRs so must know wot I'm talking about:-)

PhotoNUT: You tell him, Bro!

JR, Thanks for your words :)

If this doesn't make it into the top three I'll eat my Broccoli. Nugar this is a great shot. JR

Rod, this is a piece of art, in my opinion, the highlights here work very well with this shot.
Nugar29-Oct-2004 20:08
IRC, IRC, IRC. We might need some reverse therapy: Repeat after me: Blown highlights are not that bad, Blown highlights are not that bad, Blown highlights are not that bad, Blown highlights are not that bad...
Rod 29-Oct-2004 19:54
Nugar you are going into denial :-) This shot looks like it was set up in doors with you controlling the light source, so there is no excuse for blown highlights. You could hold a piece of white A4 paper to filter the light that's hitting the outside of the broccoli. This may cut down on the light that is on the stems, you can then place another white A4 near the stems to deflect more light onto them. Now write out 100 times "I must not show shots with blown highlights":-)

Hi Rod,

Thanks for your comments. Your highlight comment is of course right. I have been considering it on later shots using similar lighting, although I have to say that the G3's dynamic range forces you to blow them. Else, I would have had to take two shots one exposing for the highlight area and another for the translucency area and merge them. But this usually ends up as low contrast shots that I don't like.

Best,

Nugar

Beautiful shot Nugar, unlike Nutcase I think the highlights (blown highlights) are a distraction. If you look at the thumbnail that's how the shot should be "for me". It's visually balanced as the highlights don't look blown. Excellent shot mate:-)

Thanks for your words, PhotoNUT, I'm in fact very proud of it :)
PhotoNUT 28-Oct-2004 23:48
Well, done. If this was my work, I would be very proud of it. I love the colors, contrast, and the highlighs work really well. I think this would make an awesome Laminated MDF Mounted Print.

Thanks, Shu!
ctfchallenge28-Oct-2004 16:43
Very nice! I like the lighting and composition. Shu

Done, I edited the whitish specks (please tell me if you still see them) and did some selective sharpening.
Nugar28-Oct-2004 11:18
Hi Guys,

Techo: Yup, this was processed again from the Master File so it is not exactly the same as the one on the food challenge.

PhotoNUT: You are right as Techo is, I will clone that light reflection.

I checked the old version and indeed it seems a bit noisier. That is because I applied some USM to this one, so I sharpened noise too! LOL Of course I can just stick to the "that's just the broccoli's texture" version :D
PhotoNUT 28-Oct-2004 04:17
That is so cool! Looks like alien Broccoli.

In my opinion, if that was my photo, I would go into Photoshop and remove the reflection in the right upper corner of the black space. Unless that is there on purpose?
Techo 28-Oct-2004 03:28
I just checked the older one from the other challenge, and it doesn't have that streak, and it has a little less noise too.
Techo 28-Oct-2004 03:24
Aah , I remember this one. One of my favorites from the food challenge. Great photo Nugar!
If you don't mind me saying so (before anyone else does), you can touchup some of the faintly seen triangular streaks in the top right corner ;-)
