At Home IN The Sand

Just to solidify that my home is truly at the shore. again, where I capture 50% of all my images.
This one a RARE find of a live starfish burrowed in the sand.

This is not my typical composition (I zoomed in too close) but you have to understand....
the starfish was UNcovered by the tide going out and, I happened upon it so briefly and so quickly and I got so excited I nearly dropped my camera (he he) and so the story goes, this is what I captured. When the ocean had retreated again.........

the starfish was GONE!

Thanks. I thought maybe the starfish was playing soccer. Seriously, though, what I really thought was maybe there was some other creature that made it that is not in the frame. -- Victor

Hi Victor: the "little ball" of sand is simply an accumulation of sand probably caused by the rushing of water / wave back and forth. If you look closely, you will see tiny version of this at the left side of the top "arm" of the starfish. Other than dragging a scientist in for an answer, that's the best I can do for ya :-) Markjay

Can you explain what formed the little ball of sand at lower right? BTW, I like some of your other starfish pictures better, but this one seems to fit the theme the best. -- Victor

It's not like we see images of starfish in this position everyday, Victor. I would have thought the same thing, if I'd never seen one like this before :-) Markjay

Never mind. I found them. After seeing your other pictures, it's quite clear this one's right-side-up. It was the stripes and depression in the center that fooled me. -- Victor

Just so you know, the starfish IS in fact right side up, not upside down as a pervious commenter was asking. I have four other shots of the same kind of starfish, three right side up, one upside down. So, I know what both sides look like :-) Markjay

Great image. I don't think the close zoom hurts the photo. What I find a bit distracting is your copyright watermark :-). Tomas

Interesting story. I do believe the starfish is upside down. Someone who knows more about starfish please correct me if I'm wrong. Seems like that could make a difference to the comfort level of the starfish. -- Victor
