One of the problems I see here is what I see in a lot of other closeups.
The actual focus of the shot is very narrow and central.
To get around this with the equipment used I would have shot this on a tripod maybe as many times as necessary changing the point of focus till every thing was crisp and clear,using layers and then erasing every out of focus element until the desired effect is achieved.
