Mount Tom *

Western Massachusetts

In the background is the back of Mount Tom, which is the highest "mountain" in this area (at somewhat less than 1000 feet) and a significant feature of the landscape along this stretch of the Connecticut River. The grass is still a special hue that I call "spring green"...it loses that fresh tone in a very short time.

Very nice shot that captures the Western Mass landscape well. Nice color in the grass and trees and a great sky.

Lonnit, my G3 doesn't do real well with focus in landscapes, so I actually did sharpen it a bit in order to bring out some details in the background, but the trees are so delicately leafing out at this point that it still looks soft. There was a strong wind...just about froze my fingers...and the clouds made the sun come and go. I liked the way the sun hit the grass in the foreground, left a whole line of trees in shadow, and then lighted up parts of the mountain in back. I'm looking forward to getting some fall photos there.

I love the softness of it all. I could be really nit-picky and say you should have gotten the tree more to the left line of thirds, but it still works. I'm so glad you held off on the sharpening b/c the softness is what really makes the shot. ~ Lonnit

It's one of my favorite local places to photograph. The wooded back side of the mountain comes right down to the edge of a series of small family farms and open fields on one side of the road, while the other side of the road is more built up with houses, a church, a school, light industry, etc. Several environmental groups are working to preserve this beautiful open space so that Western Massachusetts doesn't become as overdeveloped as the eastern part of the state is. There are many lovely scenic areas in Western Mass., including the highest point east of the Mississippi River, but when most people think of our state, only Boston and environs come immediately to mind.

mary anne, I had no idea there was anywhere like this in Massachusetts. It is beautiful. wonderful landscape.
