Yeah, finally, I also prefer the original version to my cropped one, just wish there was that bit of space above :-) (sorry for repeating myself). Tomas

Since you're shooting digital, why not take a bunch of shots--some cropped really tight and others that include somewhat more than you really want. Then you'll have more flexibility in getting the picture you really want. I'd also try to use a variety of exposure settings. Of course, that's what I say...remembering to do it when I'm taking photos is another matter. LOL

BTW, I think I prefer the original submission to the more closely cropped one.

Thomas, thanks, I see what you mean. In my version, the eye is led from the chain in the foreground, to the tip of the anchor at the back. To me, it created a balance and the chips on the ground add to it's "broken" appearance. However, if I had spent more time with the subject, I could have taken a number of shots in order to have more choices. I like your critique (and others, if only they would) because they give me another way to really "see" the possibilities in an image. Thanks, Shu

And...also the way I cropped it it doesn't look so neatly broken & abandoned :-) TomasCx

If it were my photo, I would probably crop it like this , but it's only my humble opinion. Somewhere I read that none of the main lines of the photo (the lines that lead the eye) should end near the edge (inside or outside) and it seems sort of right. Cropping is one way to reach it. In this case it would probably be ideal not to have to crop, but to have some space above the top tip when shooting the anchor. But I'm really only starting to learn, hopefully someone more experienced will comment as well. Maybe it's not a big issue. Tomas

Thomas--Thanks for the critique and suggestions. Since I am far from the subject and can't figure how to improve per your suggestion, please take time to show me how you'd correct it? If you would be so kind as to download to your system and send me a copy of the improvements, I'd be very grateful. If not, it's ok. There's probably more of these down the bottom of Lake Ontario. One doesn't often get a striking subject like this one. I'm learning! Thanks. Shu (shupiz@cox.net)

I really like this one. I like (near)diagonal compositions. One thing I would change is the top tip of the anchor ending almost at the photo's top edge. I would advise either to have it in the shot with some reserve or (when it's not on the original) crop it more resolutely (and maybe do some more cropping on the other edges to balance the composition.
But the colors of the rust are really precise. I'd like to have one of these at home :-)
