He was cooking marinated beef strips, so it's smoke from the hot grill. I wasn't taking a lot of notice of the food....too busy taking photos and admiring his....French accent ;-)
Interesting diagonals going on here, with his head position thus, and his two arms and hands holding the pepper (?) mill. Not to mention the tilted background.
