under lock & key

Washington, DC

While visiting DC last October, I found that a makeshift fence had been built around the Washington Monument, presumably as some sort of interim measure to prevent possible terrorist attack. I was struck by the how changed a nation we had become since 9/11 and wanted to use the fence/chain as symbolic of that change. Being able to juxtiposition the chain against the Washington Monument was easy enough. But the position of the sun was brutal. So I inched downward ever so slightly until one of the links in the chain blocked the majority of the sun's direct rays. And this helped to make for an acceptable shot.

Thank you for your nice comments. As I indicated above, the sun just happened to be where it was and I dealt with it by aligning it with one of the links in the chain. What you may not realize (or may realize better than I) is how much sunlight that one link is actually blocking out. Without it, the picture was a total washout. But I see what you are saying Lonnit and Sigurd. It does appear as though the sun is breaking through the chains like a ray of hope. I agree, when you look at it like that, the picture has even more symbolic meaning. But I can't really take credit for that.

This is a great shot for so many reasons! I agree with Lonnit that the sun on the chain is what elevates it from a good shot to a great one too. It looks like the sun is melting through the chain and it could burst open at any moment.

"acceptable" shot? Are you nuts?!!! The sun MAKES the shot! It's the glimmer of hope that juxtaposes the chains! Excellent capture and statement. This one certainly does tell a story! You've got to get this published somewhere. ~ Lonnit

I like it very much, very symbolic.
