I like the idea and execution. I feel it would be great also with a bit less tweaking in PS

Very simple. I created a copy of the background layer. Then i desaturated it, twisted the curves a little (kind of squeezed sinus function), set blending mode to overlay or luminosity (not sure) and adjusted opacity. It really only took 10 to 15 minutes as i was trying to figure how to adjust the curves and blending mode. Tocko
