I was looking to capture a sunrise over my neighbourhood, and saw/heard this bird. I think I really need to get some filters...

I don't know any online resource discussing it, but the way to properly expose the sky at sunrise is to meter off of the sky close to the sun without including the sun in the frame. --Garrett

The problem with this photo is not a lack of filters. It is simply overexposure. You probably should have used two stops less exposure in order to properly expose the sky. The bird is already a silhouette, so making it darker doesn't hurt. --Garrett
