Sugar(*)

This picture came about because the first thing that comes to mind whenever I think of sugar is just how much sugar my husband puts in his coffee (although not quite to this extreme, I admit.) I had a lot of unnecessary stuff in the background so I used PS to change the background and to add a border.

I could see this hanging in an Ikea kitchen/dining room display! Ironically, a nice clean looking shot of a mess! LOL! ~ Lonnit

You can read more about the technique Pops mentions here:http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/blended_exposures.shtml

I think that would be the only way to retain the detail in the sugar while still getting a proper exposure on the cup. Possibly underexposing the shot and bringing out shadow detail with the Shadow/Highlight tool if you have PS CS.

I like what you've done with the frame and the shadows in the background add a nice element to the image in my opinion.

The boarder works a lot better now. To tone done the sugar I believe you have to take two pictures, one nicely under exposed, and then merge the two. I've never even tried that technique.

Thanks Gayle and Pops. I made the changes as you suggested - think they helped the pic? One thing I'm concerned about is the sugar looks very bright white. Any thoughts on how to help tone that down a bit? -Bri.

I laughed when I first saw this and understood the bit of a "Little sugar with your coffee!" The light/shadow of the background is an excellent element in this photo. I would have made an effort to change the color of the frame to pick up the color of the cup, but that's just me.

The background is excellent, the composition is spot on but the whole pic looks just a tad over-exposed. Try adjusting the levels to remove the light hazy look.
