It is hard to decide which version of the image works best. I'm thinking B&W but am wondering if the color channels could be played with a bit during the conversion to make the Mother Colorado Long Neck Mule stand out a little more from the background? Like the title :-)

Hmmmmm - it's a toss up with me as to which version works better for the topic. In this one the bright light area on the baby's nose draws attention more I think, so I'll go with this version. CJ

Thanks for the in depth comment Tommy. I've got a busy weakend ahead but hopefully I'll get some time to play with it. -Doug

Doug, the problem needs to be defined before we can deal with it especially since there are several possible solutions which are up to you. The problem is that the crucial point of interest is not well defined. It almost works but lacks immediate impact. So, how to improve that. I think the color version is more successful in this regard because the noses stand out better from the bg. Why? Because of the color. In this bw version, the dark shade of the large head melts into the bg at just the wrong place which color helps separate. The preceding suggestions might also work just as well to accomplish your vision. -tv

Thanks to both of you for the pointers. -Doug

If you shot with longer focal length, the angle gets narrower and you get smaller field in the backround, that usually helps to separate the object in the foreground. DaB

No I don't think you would have got any more blur if you backed up to get exactly the same shot without as you say opening up your F stop. I was more thinking of zooming in to 200mm & just getting the two heads in & getting more blur without having to open up the F stops. There was no shooting info or exif with the picy so I wasn't sure what the zoom was set on. Maybe you could burn in some of the brightness a bit in the lower background to cement our eyes on the heads better..

Colorado long neck mules. What a funny man you are Rod. This was shot at 96mm. So if I were to have backed up then zoomed closer to 200mm it would have blurred significantly more? This is at f8 which is as wide open as I like to shoot this lens but maybe opening it up would have also helped. For those of you reading this, these "vacation" lenses with a wide zoom range come with a big sacrifice. -Doug

I like the B&W as a picy better but the colour one does seem to convey smack dab a bit better, Maybe because the tones of the Colorado long neck mules blends more into the background in the B&W. If you could have got closer on 200mm the background could have blurred out a lot better.

You're quick on the comments Penny. Glad you didn't see it as off topic since I used a very, very small piece of negative space for the smack dab part. -Doug

Okay, so I posted my comment and now I'm not sure. This is good too - better contrast. Penny Street

I'm not sure which I like better, but maybe the color one - only because the view of middle point stands out a bit better. Nicely seen and composed.
