My earlier comment seems to have self-destructed.

The photograph is breathtakingly wonderfully brilliant. If I could take one shot like this I would die happy.

I neglected to comment on the image which is quite masterfully framed to convey visually the massiveness of the ship and the pounding of the waves. Usually the weather gets in the way not to mention the equipment but this lens surely got the goods. -tv

tv. the lens itself cost me around $2,000AU a few years ago and I was sceptical that I could get performance from a 50/500.
Apart from it being a bit heavy, I found it very useful and even tried a 2X convertor with it (ended up as rubbish).I definately can't use it as a walk around but tried it on a number of occassions always drawing attention from other photographers, even hand holding it at night with no flash, taking photos at 200-300 metres of a movie being made in Newcastle(I think it was the 4th Batman movie).
Eventually I stuck with the 17/40 L but now want a 70/200 L with IS as a walkaround.
The 12 mp Ixus960 I carry in my pocket just produces too much noise and I find the 8mp 20D beats it easy for sharpness and produces much nicer photos.

Impressive waves difficult to capture. How do you like your lens? -tv

I was standing on the shore with my big lense, equal to 800mm with the 20D.

The coast at Newcastle is all beaches and houses and you can walk on the road or on the pedestrian walk for probably 10 km without loosing sight of the waves on a beach, we get a large amount of bulk carriers standing off port , probably around 20-30 at any given time.
If they don't head out to see when warned this is what happens.
Twice since I have been alive.

I can tell you, the guy selling pies and drinks on the beach made a fortune seeing it was winter.

Excellent capturing of the waves and the stormy weather! I really like the composition of this too. CJ
