No Penny this is my first Nikon. From what I can gather the D40 isn't that accommodating of old lenses - limitations on metering and autofocusing

thanks for the info. Sounds like you made a well thought out decision.
I'm wondering if you have any other old Nikon lenses because I've heard that the nice thing about Nikon is that you can keep using the ole equipment (for the most part) on any of the new cameras. If you don't own them, you can also buy used ones (hint hint). Anyway, you've upped your ante now start learning!!! And don't forget to carry the G9 with you so you can post to eligible. Penny Street

Hi Penny
The 18 - 55 kit lens.

I love my G9, but the last couple of months its been struggling to cope with the grey London light. By 3:00pm I have to set it at ISO 800 and encounter noise problems. So I got the D40 in the hope it will work better at low light conditions. It is relatively light to carry around and small enough not to be too intrusive for street shots. I know it has its limitations, only 6M (but I have no intention of printing poster size prints), no IS (again I don't plan to get a big zoom) and no sensor cleaner (this shouldn't be a problem, just using one lens).

Thought about getting a 1000D - £100 more expensive than the D40. But the thing that made me go for the latter was the quality of the lens build. The Nikon kit lens looks better engineered than the Canon (guess its sacrilege to say that here).

Of course the biggest limitation of the D40 is I can't post the pics in the Eligible Gallery, but I've always got the G9 for that. :)

Nikon D40 - that's a surprise! What lens(es) did you get?

I'm not upset, really... I just used to have two pet pigs... It's not appealing to me... but it's well done, YB. I'd like to have been at the market, shooting. :) ~Lydia

Thanks for your comments, the three photos posted were taken this morning when I went to test my newly bought Nikon D40 (for some reason not included in the list of cameras).

Thursday, Friday and Saturday Borough Market Farmers Market becomes one of London's must go places for foodies (and photographers).

Sorry you were upset Lydia :(

The lighting is excellent, good detail, and the coloring appropriate, yes, but I can hardly look at this picture of death and it's enough to turn me into a vegetarian! So I'll just say well done YB. CJ

I'm sorry... but when I saw this said outloud, and there's noone else in the room, "That's disgusting." *sigh*

Sorry... but there you have it. ~Lydia

That is magnificent, a noble portrait. Unbelievable that you just took it.
