thanks again for the comments - and, like I said, it wasn't creativity this time - it was just a lot of experimentation to see what worked. (I moved the light source around a lot too which I think helped beat the flatness) Glad you like it!

aam, dt, Rod, thanks and Carole, I played around with different F-stops and wound up with the picture that was the most close-up. Yes, I think it helped the focus.I put an extra light in the kitchen too.Penny Street

aam...I've got a Theater II Popcorn Popper. It makes stovetop popcorn. It works well and tastes a lot like fresh popcorn bought at a theater and is very inexpensive. ~dtallakson
