Thanks Angioman. No special technique. Just water dripping from the kitchen faucet onto a dinner plate. I tried a cereal bowl, too, but the dinner plate gave more of the crown effect I was looking for. The drive mode was set to High
Speed Continuous. I used Aperture Priority with a Speedlite 580EX II (on camera) set to High Speed Sync. The ambient lighting was just the normal kitchen lights. I also used a wireless remote shutter release. Since I had no timing device for the water drops the trick was adjusting the faucet so that the timing of the drops was fairly regular. I had very little success until I set the camera to High Speed Continuous but even then very few of the shots were keepers. ~dtallakson

Thanks tv. I took many, many shots. Most were worthless but a few were like this. Timing is everything! ~dtallakson

This is one of the best I've seen of this kind. Nice work. It actually has some interest beyond the strictly scientific. -tv

Thanks Lydia. Oops..uploaded wrong version. It's fixed now. Lighting was just a 580 EXII Speedlight set to high speed shutter sync. I used aperture priority. Oh, and I also used a piece of photo paper attached to the flash to bounce it.

Thanks Sue Anne

What was your lighting setup, dt, if you don't mind saying. ~Lydia

Beautiful timing and drops.

Glad you cleaned the bowl at last mate:-)

Wow, dt! This is marvelous... like a crown in water. ~Lydia

(Unfortunately, it's also oversized for the challenge at 183001 bytes.)

This is really good (and difficult). The b/g doesn't bother me at all.

Well done - this is a very difficult capture!!! I agree that you should keep trying for a better background. The background here could easily be PS'd. However, the subject matter itself is perfection. jano

I thought we might get a water drop shot in this challenge but wasn't expecting the Budweiser tradmark. Nicely done. -Doug

Rod...sad to say this is not the dog's dish...sigh. ;^) . Thanks Penny and CJ ~dtallakson

Great looking crown splash DT! I have to agree with Rod on the dish though, so if you decide to redo this, a nice dish or colored water would look even better. CJ

Rod you're funny. I like the crown-like design and the blue bg helps make it look regal. Penny Street
Rod 03-Jan-2009 08:41
That's an excellent water drop DT but I don't think you should have used the dogs dish, all the scratches & marks on the bottom spoil the effect. The best thing to use is one of your missus best crystal bowls & some blue loo.
