Thanks for the comments. I'm already itching to know what the theme of the next challenge is :p

Really good street photography, K! I like the muted colors. Your crop worked well to make the shot look more level. As you will discover as you take more and more pictures everything in a shot is important, all the elements add to or distract from your subject. Keep shooting and posting we are all here to learn and the challenges are a good way to become more familiar with your camera and photography in general. Welcome! We look forward to seeing a lot more of your images! ~Sharon

so now try another picture! You may post up to three in each category, six altogether. Penny Street

Thanks Penny. I tried editing it as per your suggestions and it looks better! I am incredibly new to photography and appreciate any and all pointers that people have to give me. I never even realized that the door in the background was important - I guess I have a lot to learn.

not necessarily - and remember, YOU are the judge.
If I were doing this, though, I might consider a very very slight crop of the left side just to line up the doorway - or you might use skew to accomplish the same thing. But I like the busy composition the way it is. It's a crowd after all.
Only my opinion..... Penny Street

Thanks for the comments. I tried cropping it to see if it would look better. The picture looks tighter that way, but I find that I lose focus on the dude holding the sign. What's the "correct" composition for a picture like this? Should I crop it so that everything fills the screen?

apart from that "empty" space in the left of the frame, i really like the journalistic/documentary feel of the shot. subdued colors in post-processing compliments the subject/title really well. -Abstract

Thanks! Thanks for clarifying everything. I was just confused with all the different categories and rules, so I just wanted to make sure.

I don't think I'll be ready for any sort of "Eligible" Competition yet, but I will post pictures whenever possible to get valuable feedback.

Thanks for the warm welcomes!

The main challenge is taking a picture within the challenge period. Those usually land in "Eligible". Parallel with the challenge there's always an Exhibition, for pictures taken with any camera at any time. One main difference is of course that it isn't so challenging to dig in archives, as it is to go out on a new "assignment". Both categories are voted for, however, but while the winner in Eligible gets to decide the new topic and host the new challenge, the winner in Exhibition only gets a good feeling ;) The idea behind the challenges isn't weighted as much towards it being a competition as the more collaborating spirit of it all. During challenge period one can share thoughts, ideas, variants of a picture, critique, techniques, whatever. Then again - simply watching a good photo can be rewarding in itself, and some are content with getting their pictures evaluated during voting, and don't participate so much in writing. Takes all kinds.

I like your message and the picy looks great!
You are eligible for the exhibition category voting. If you take and post a picture during the challenge period (while it's running) then you can post to eligible. If you win the eligible category then you get the privelege of hosting the subsequent challenge.Welcome!

Sorry, I must've missed that part.

I will move it now. Does that mean it is no longer eligible for competition?

Cheers,
