The contrast of colors is amazing.

Thanks Penny, Kiki & Tommy:-) Yes I can see the rich black in the linked picy Penny posted & the similarities to me ole tree bark picy. You don't have to be sorry Tommy as it's all a bit of fun here & the missus likes your version in pending best. The overall consensus seems to be the bark looks better being very dark. This has been a good lesson in how a small part of a picy can have such a big effect, thanks to Tommy & the girls.

I played with this, and love that black'ish bark ever more. It would make a very nice abstract all on its own, imo. One thing about this: Each time I see it, it reminds me of Doug's "Fear This". An unfair comparision because the genres could hardly be more different. Well seen, anyway. I'd like to see more pictures of this tree.

here - I looked up Clyfford Still myself -http://www.clyffordstill.net/art/untitled1951.html -
So he does use black, just not necessarily in the example we were shown.
I find this particular one really reminicent of your bark. (but not your bite).

This one is very satisfying to my eye except now I can see in it all the streaks on my monitor. The Clifford Still photograph captured too much glare although it is true that the textures of paint are part of the art. Sorry I criticized part of your art instead of trying to understand it. Now it has an edginess that was missing for me before when the "glare" seemed accidental and worked against the overall abstract qualities of claustraphobia and darkness closing in. The few remaining light specks work well to keep the context. -tv

Thanks Penny I have put the original in Pending. The funny thing is the light haze in the black that annoyed Tommy is very similar to the painting Tommy is referring to, not quite so light though. His Missus normally makes sure he takes his medication. I hope he's not giving em to the dog:-)

I should probably not be a nag but I'm not convinced. Can you please put your other one in pending so I can see them both?

Here's the new & hopefully improved version, thanks Tommy. One thing though mate, if this now wins the challenge you will have to run the new one:-)
Rod 01-Nov-2008 05:15
Thanks Tommy, the one in Pending looks a lot more solid & less subtle than this. The white haze was weak sunlight, above & below, shadows. But you're right it doesn't look like sunlight a. I will have a play with it & see if I can bring it out to look more like weak sunlight or go down the route you did in pending...........Or I could leave it as is just to annoy you:-)hehe

Rod, sorry to say but with Clifford Still in mind, maybe unfairly, this is beginning to annoy me because of the white haze in the blackness. It seems accidental like reflected glare off glass in front of the subject. I'm going to clone it out and put it in Pending to show what I mean. -tv

Its really nice to see your imagination at work Penny.I think mine has seized up:-)

today I see the bottom of the ocean where coral doesn't see much light.

PS. Sharon, this is bark peeling off a tree trunk. We have quite a few gum trees down here that shed all their bark.
Rod 28-Oct-2008 06:25
Thanks Penny, Lydia, Sharon, RK, Doug, & Tommy:-) I really like this one too & didn't have to do much processing.

Interesting point of view - the tree's. Very abstract expressionistic. This could almost be Clifford Still with a camera. -tv

Let me rephrase by quoting some old German philosopher (whose name I don't remember):
"The beautiful is that which pleases universally without a concept."

Lydia, of course it's minimal color. What else!!! Penny Street

This is wonderful, Rod. It gives your eye a lot to look at and your brain a lot to wonder about. Even with the title I have a hard time discerning what I am looking at and that is just fine with me. The light and the colors work really well. Good work. ~Sharon

At first I thought we were in a cave looking at stalactites and stalagmites. -Doug

oh my. We are really working hard aren't we? You couldn't really call this anything but minimal color I don't think.

I can feel your brain working overtime on this topic. :)
